For many older people, especially men, loneliness is a huge issue. For many men, the connections they made through work disappear when they retire, and they have no easy replacement for the friendships and quasi-friendships of the workplace. For many senior men, the SIR organization can provide a way to make new friends and have fun as they age. See Web Link for info about the SIR branch that serves Los Altos, Mountain View and surrounding cities.

and like Bruce - stay involved in stuff you love / Carbon Free Mountain View group etc.
My wife and I decided (it took some convincing for me) to 'age_in_place' since that was a possibility for us (good jobs, much retirement-saving, early small real estate investing, living-below-means). Then it helps to stay connected.
My main worry is / the less wealthy. It is clear that they not only suffer from poorer schools, poor early health care but also less retirement+healthbenefit jobs during their working lives / but also the negative consequences of all that ACCUMULATED toward the last third of their years. And so, their years are more-numbered than the above-median community members.
