What's the phrase for the thing where you preferentially select a particular person through the lens of race and gender rather than merit?

Dan, your comment assumes that the nomination of an African-American woman for the position of Senator from California is solely based on race and gender, implying that merit is not considered. This assumption is problematic for several reasons:

The comment presupposes that the nominee's qualifications, skills, and experience are not taken into account, solely focusing on race and gender. In reality, political nominations typically consider a candidate's entire portfolio, including their qualifications and merit.

Diversity in political representation is important because it ensures that different perspectives and voices are heard. Nominating individuals from various racial and gender backgrounds promotes a more inclusive democracy. It does not automatically mean merit is disregarded.

Complex issues such as diversity, inclusion, and representation cannot be reduced to a simplistic dichotomy between merit and identity. Acknowledging the multifaceted nature of these topics is essential for a nuanced understanding.

In summary, your faulty assumptions lie in oversimplifying the nomination process, disregarding the importance of diversity, and overlooking historical and social context. It's crucial to consider these factors when discussing matters related to representation and opportunities.

To pursue another rhetorical question, what is the phrase for someone who assumes nominees from certain racial or gender groups lack merit?

A questionable appointment to say the least! But it is political hack extraordinaire Newsom, after all. Definitely a reward appointment for having the right connections and espousing the correct woke agenda. California should be ashamed and embarrassed. [Portion removed]

Not ashamed and not embarrassed. Not any more than having Newsom appoint the first ever Hispanic US Senator from California! [and the first male since Alan Cranston retired in 1993 :]
