El Camino Health faces new questions over employing doctor accused of molesting teenager decades ago while a Catholic priest

Original post made on Aug 31, 2023

Former Mountain View Mayor Sally Lieber is asking the El Camino Healthcare District to terminate a psychiatrist's contract after the hospital learned in 1988 that the doctor was accused of sexual misconduct while a priest.

Lieber and the ambulance chaser Boucher grandstanding all over the place what with Lieber running for supervisor and all:
Lieber [is] raising her concerns now because it's an election year and she needs as much free publicity as she can muster.

Hospital reacts

El Camino Healthcare District Board Chair Dr. George Ting said he first heard about the allegations about 30 years ago when he was serving as chief of medical staff at the hospital. Ting said he was not aware of any policy changes put in place at the time as a result of the situation. Ting added that he doesn’t see a need to have a public discussion about it at the board level today unless it’s brought to the board by staff.

“I’d have to have some confidence in the administration’s ability to determine if something does need to be brought up in that way,” Ting said. “Certainly, if there’s something substantial that we need to own up to, there’s no question I would want to bring it up. … If they say that they’ve looked into it, and the existing policies cover it well, and they don’t think we need further investigation, nor change our policy, I take that at face value.”

El Camino Health Communications Director Christopher Brown told this news organization that Havel has been a practicing physician for more than 40 years and is an active member in good standing with El Camino Health’s hospital independent medical staff.

“He is respected among staff, peers, and patients"

First Lieber runs for City Council and then Board of Equalization at the same time and pretends to be surprised it's a conflict for her to do both. Now she's running for County Supervisor. I think this is just another distraction. She should NOT be the next county supervisor, no way, no how!

Los Angeles Archdiocese lists the accusation of sexual abuse by Havel of a minor for five years. The grooming began when she sought counseling from the then priest; she was 13. [Portion removed.]
Yet the El Camino Healthcare District was and is disinterested in the safety of children. E.C. Hospital and its hierarchy are more interested in protecting their prestige than the community's children. [Portion removed.]

Thanks to Malea Martin and the Mountain View Voice for their excellent reporting on this disturbing situation.

False accusations of child sexual abuse are extremely rare. Multiple false accusations are even rarer. [Portion removed.]

Despite El Camino Hospital's vigorous defense of their continuing decision to keep Dr. Havel on staff, I agree with attorney Ray Boucher. Ultimately, protecting the people who walk through the Hospital's doors from possible harm should have been their number one priority after learning about these serious accusations.

Thank you, Sally Lieber, for leaning in on this. I've reached out to each board member of El Camino Health on this issue (the second time, they sent my letters back, unopened), every then-sitting city councilperson in Mountain View, Sunnyvale, Los Altos, and Palo Alto, the California Medical Board, the Joint Commission, multiple newspapers, and so many others. Finally this is getting some attention. [Portion removed.]

This reminds me of the 98 year old former Nazi prison guard in Germany that is recently arrested. They had to hurry up because most of the ex guards his age are no longer with us. Not so many to prosecute.

Only in this case, there's a believable story of a sort of redemption. The guy changed careers and has established himself through decades of atonement since the original issue. So, no foregiveness? It's a bizarre cruel world that isn't doing well for itself with fixations like this. And Sally Lieber is jumping on the bandwagon in a feeble or questionable attempt to gain votes. Most important thing is don't elect Sally Lieber.

Since when are accusations enough to derail someone? "Accusations are rarely wrong" - where in the world did you come up with this statistic? Unless and until those accusations are made real and a conviction is produce this person is INNOCENT otherwise. At least it used to be this way in this country but maybe that's not so fashionable any longer and we allow people to be character assassinated in the press (oh wait...).
