This is very sad. The H1-B holders are people typically in technology looking to contribute to America's success and their own path to citizenship. The US immigration policy needs to be updated to encourage and attract highly educated and professional people. Canada and other countries use a ranking system to help qualify people for immigration and citizenship. The US, on the other hand, is stuck in the 1970s with a braindead lottery system based on your country of origin.

As a US born Silicon Valley engineer we should extend the H1-B timeline only on condition we also make the criteria for getting a tech visa more sane. We’re being sold a bill of goods by the big tech companies in many cases, hiring so many foreign workers where Americans could fill these high paying jobs with some training. I have worked with so many H1-B visa holders doing IT work largely from India but also China that are not doing anything we could not do with a domestic labor force. US citizens in low paying jobs should be given more help to level up before we import so many people. we have to stop trusting the Googles, and Metas to do the best thing. So often we’re displacing the potential of our own citizens.

Great comments, Jay. The H1-B program is too often used by rich corporations as a way to deflate wages for American workers, instead of being restricted to those with special skills in short supply.
