Appreciate the 'oldest graybeard' on the Board bringing up some specifics. WHY did the administration NOT UPDATE the specific curriculum materials???? When a CA school board approves a course - Of Course they approve a specific curriculum materials package. [admins should really, really know this / Ed Code 60000+ = the law] MVLA Board Policy 6141 ..."He/she also shall present information about the resources that would be necessary to successfully implement the curriculum."

Now - how will the possible(probably not) state inclusion of "caste" in discrimination law (and this curriculum?) effect views of our Indo-American Trustee? [a very fast "hardball" question]

Congratulations and a big thank you to the MVLA board and district for getting this work approved and ready to go for next year's 9th graders and all 9th graders in the future! Theirs was a long, slow, careful process, with lots of public comments, and importantly, student comments.

So happy that this decision affirmed Ethnic Studies in our high schools. The curriculum is excellent, reflecting thoughtful intersectionality with history, social sciences, economics, etc. I am confident that our teaching professionals will continue to refine and tune the course to our kids' needs and the changing world around them. This course will teach our kids to be thoughtful, insightful, empathetic, and inclusive students. There is nothing to fear here, they can handle the truth. This generation of kids is active, socially aware, inquisitive, and very much about equity and social justice. Another top concern of theirs is the existential threat they face in climate change. Climate will have an inordinate amplifying impact on inequities in our world, so I hope disussions around this will become the norm.
