The recent virtual panel discussion at Stanford University on "What does it mean to be Asian in America?" resonates with themes explored in Charles Dickens' novel "Bleak House." Just as the panelists examined the challenges faced by Asian Americans and the consequences of erasure, "Bleak House" delves into the societal disparities and the perils of a flawed legal system. I got more into it after reading Web Link on a site I encountered not so many days ago. Both narratives shed light on the importance of representation and recognition. In "Bleak House," characters battle against a complex bureaucracy that perpetuates injustice, while the panelists advocate for increased data collection and inclusion of Asian Americans in medical research to address healthcare disparities. Both discussions expose the need to confront implicit biases and ensure equal opportunities for all, echoing the themes of identity, disparities, and the consequences of erasure that persist in our society.
