LifeMoves Mountain View promises to help homeless clients find stable housing in three months. The majority of them don't.

Original post made on Mar 30, 2023

A monthslong investigation found that LifeMoves Mountain View's much-touted interim shelter program struggles to find its residents permanent housing, and faces allegations of understaffing, poor conditions and mishandled complaints.

Great piece of journalism, kudos to the Voice.

Disappointing to read how Lifemoves is trying to re-define its goal as transitioning clients to "stable-ish" housing.

This is pretty even keeled reporting by Malea. She’s gotten better at telling stories from both sides. Good piece.

Thank you for the quality investigative journalism.

It is not enough to have good intentions, we need to see good results. Funding should go to programs that yield good results, and based on the findings published here, LifeMoves is not a program that yields good results.

Maybe I'm just pessimistic, or maybe I'm just realistic. 3 to 4 months seems like too short of a period to solve a problem for someone in this situation in the local area. Consider that Mountain View has failed to construct as many BMR units as RHNA has required over the past 8 years. Doesn't that almost certainly lead to a very difficult housing situation for lower income people, consider what was required in RHNA was not even enough in the first place.

And staffing problems have beset all sorts of endeavors in our area. Why should Life Moves be any different, and why should it be surprising that given a lack of staff, they have difficulty?
