After a successful first round of aid, Mountain View Solidarity Fund leaders look back on what made their unconventional model work

When the Mountain View Solidarity Fund received a directive to distribute $1 million from the city of Mountain View to those who needed it most last year, leaders of the grassroots group didn’t follow the typical protocol.

This is a great example of folks working to help those who have fallen through the cracks. It probably wasn’t perfect, but no support program can do it all.
Congratulations to the recipients, the tireless members of the Solidarity Fund, and the City of Mountain View.

How exactly did this "work"? Did anyone ever believe that it wouldn't work? I haven't heard a time when giving people money didn't work. Seems like a farce to deem it a 'success'...of course it was going to be a 'success'. I'm sure success was based on a survey that said "do you feel better with free money? Yes/No?"

The city has a lot of problems, giving people free money is not a great investment. The money would have been better used setting up daycares for these poorer families to have reliable childcare. It's an investment that would pay a longer term benefit to the community than having them spend it on chips and rent.
