This article gives casual readers an incorrect impression that large numbers of local parents are agitating to drop mask mandates. This is not the case. Local parents have been very supportive of such mandates. I do wish the Voice would be more circumspect with articles like this that do not represent local reporting, or even good reporting. This article takes a few bits of anecdotal information ("Parents and educators interviewed by CalMatters") and spins it as some kind of systematically gathered quantitative data. Are more parents in favor of mask mandates or against them? This article doesn't come right out and say, but the rhetorical flourishes it uses imply that more are against them. This is a propagandistic technique, and I am sorry to see it given play here in our highly respected local newspaper. I hope you can do a better weeding such articles out in the future.
