School district looks to community for Monta Loma open space design

Original post made on Dec 13, 2021

After receiving heated criticism about putting up security fences around Monta Loma Elementary School, the Mountain View Whisman School District has now scheduled a slew of meetings to get public input on how to redesign the campus.

Not sure where to put this but why do the MV Public Schools here loving taking so many days off?? Kids are out of school starting Dec20 and do not come back until Jan4, and than there's 10 days of half-day parent-teacher conferences until Jan14th. This is some lackadaisical scheduling run amuck. Who approves these insane lax schedules, is it the school board !???

@TomR, Yes the school board sets the calendar for the district. Feel free to provide feedback to them. What you're describing is not unusual, though. Kids in Los Altos and Palo Alto also have a two-week break for winter holidays, and PA middle/high schoolers have an extra day (back Jan 5). Most schools do something similar for conferences, except the private school we're most familiar with closes entirely for parent-teacher conferences (a few days off completely instead of a week or two of half days).

I think we should commend Trustee Chiang for continuing to try to direct the Board toward use of school district tax money for STUDENT use, and not City parkland uses.

Castro school still produces a majority of students who do not meet grade level state standards when they finish in 5th grade (42 percent in Language, 64 percent in Math). A Monta Loma school neighbor - who is upset about not getting to ALWAYS freely walk her dog with new school gating/fencing - hardly (to me) seems a priority for education spending. No! Don't waste public school education tax money. Pull in the City!
