California pulls the plug on gas-powered leaf blowers under new law

Original post made on Oct 14, 2021

Nearly three decades after Peninsula cities began implementing bans on gas-powered leaf blowers, the effort has found a foothold at the state level, with the governor signing a bill that will phase out their sales.

So glad that the state is moving forward on this, since the Mountain View City Council seems uninterested in curbing this significant source of pollution.

So the use of machines is not banned, just the purchase? So you can go and buy one in Nevada when the one you have now wears out in like, what, 30 years? Seems utterly ridiculous and ineffectual. Why bother? Just to get a headline? Do the governor and legislature think we're sooooo stupid that nobody will read the actual story? Nice.

I am very glad, given Mountain View's inaction on this. This morning, I was attempting to work outside (first gardening, then "work" work), and it was really noisy due to gas leaf blowers being operated all around the neighborhood. Even though the justification for this law is air pollution, another huge win will be elimination of the oppressive noise pollution that we all have to put up with any time we actually want to enjoy all those manicured gardens by being outside.
It also seems to me that for gardens without lawns, where some leaf litter on the ground is acceptable, you don't need to use a leaf blower, certainly not at the regularity with which they are used by professional landscaping outfits.
