Sewage shows spread of coronavirus across Santa Clara County

The amount of the SARS-CoV-2 virus in local wastewater has tripled, and in some cases quadrupled, since June 16, indicating a much higher rate of infection.

Not to be pedantic, but couldn't this simply indicate the presence of more virions, rather than a higher rate of infected individuals? Not doubting that rates are increasing, but Delta variant is more effective at replicating within the body in a given individual; assume that would also translate into an increase in viral genetic material in sewage.

...fine, I'm being pedantic.
