VTA's revised light-rail plans delay reopening past July

Original post made on Jul 15, 2021

Light-rail service has been suspended since a mass shooting seven weeks ago at a VTA facility in San Jose. Officials told the transit agency's board they plan to reinstate service in a phased approach, but it won't happen this month.

The bigger questions are: 1. Does anyone miss it? 2. Would it be cheaper to give riders vouchers for ride sharing services?

@Dan Waylonis - Re question2: With current price spikes in car services, probably not. As an aside, so much for Prop 22 argument that passing it was essential to avoid huge price hikes :)

This just does not make a lot of sense the way it is reported here. Of course, I completely understand that people were traumatized and need time. That makes total sense. But the equipment? And needing to find new buildings? You replace any damaged computers or terminals. You repair the visible reminders of what happened. And then you get the facility back up and running. This sort of thing does happen far too often in this country, but I have never heard of saying "we will need new spaces" and this will take months to bring back online.

@SRB, Yeah, car services have been impacted exactly like everything else with Covid. Fewer drivers are out there due to drivers not being as eager to share rides with strangers. And fewer riders who ALSO don't want to share as many rides for the same reason, as well as fewer people traveling in general. All that drives up costs to keep such a system running. That said, all of that is likely to mitigate over time.

Yes

No.

100+ riders on/off of a train during a single end to end journey. * $20+ per trip = $2000+ for a single one way train journey.

Math. Its a good think to pick up.

The VTA is a poorly run business exactly because it is a BAD (local) GOVERNMENT BUREAUCRACY that has never been managed as a business. Read several decades of County Civil Grand Jury Reports on this topic, for deeper detail.

I think there may be real problems with 'the crew' that had a majority of it's members murdered. They did similar jobs maintining the rail system (as I think I read). But - VTA management responsibility again - what type of Working Environment/Hostility + Mental Problems did the VTA managers ignore? I think (IMO) the VTA is trying to make 'the problem' be structures - and not VTA OPERATIONS/MANAGEMENT failures. (just my opinion - and the Civil Grand Jury reports on the VTA)
