Community Comes Together for MVHS Prom

Original post made by Sophia Caramagno, Waverly Park, on May 17, 2021

Katie Johnson and I are brand new advisors for the ASB student leadership class at MVHS, and Prom was the first real event that our students were able to put on. We wanted to make it special because this year has been so hard on so many, but our enthusiasm definitely outweighed our practical experience. It is with such gratitude and sincere appreciation that we wish to acknowledge the unprecedented contributions of the whole MVHS parent community to make this event truly magical.

The restrictions of COVID meant we needed an outdoor event, no busses, and room for everyone to keep their distance. Our Dance committee, four of the hardest working and most creative problem solvers in our class came up with a carnival theme but if we really wanted to make it special, we needed help. The call went out. And the Mountain View community responded with such grace and excitement.

While our students planned and strategized and contacted vendors and filled out forms, our parents rallied the troops. Our generals included Mrs. Smith, Mrs. Bennion, Mrs. Davies and Mr and Mrs. Stanley. They put an army of volunteers on the ground to blow up balloons and hang lights donated by the PTSA until the campus was transformed into a wonderland. They built backdrops that said Prom 2021 in giant cut out letters and helium balloons. They raised money so we could add casino games, an arcade, carnival games, photo booths, and mini golf. They manned a Mocktails station and popped popcorn. They wound cotton candy. They handed out ice cream. And they did it all with so much love.

Ms. Johnson and I want to thank you. Your students felt cherished. They felt safe. They felt welcomed and included and honored. They were both adorably embarrassed to see you manning the exits and proud to mention how hard you worked on their behalf. They delighted over the surprises you created for them. And every single one of them had a fabulous time. Every single one of them got this one glorious night out of a very dark year.

Ms. Johnson and I are humbled by your generosity, your total commitment to your children and your willingness to partner with us to make something special happen.

Thank you,

Ms. Johnson and Ms. Caramagno
