Mountain View police solve 30-year-old homicide cold case

Mountain View police announced Tuesday that they have closed a 1990 murder case after DNA evidence linked a now-dead Sunnyvale man to a homicide in a Mountain View parking lot.

I find it really strange that this 30-year-old cold case was broken by sending the crime scene samples to the county lab. Did no one previously think to do that? I'm glad they have a suspect. The article leaves me puzzled why it took so long. DNA testing has been around since 1985. Presumably John Snowgrass's DNA sample was added to the database before he died in 2006. So what stopped police from solving this case 20+ years ago?
