The other day, someone sent an email that ended with this question: how can educated people can be so misinformed? My response was this. Did you ever think that the problem is that we're TOO educated via the system that is lacking in achieving its pure goal - education? We need to train ourselves to do research and form our own opinions based on objectivity and practicality. These skills are not taught adequately at any level in our schools. I've spent a lot of time thinking and researching this issue. For example, our state is rated number 47 out of fifty in education!! I remember my dad, who was an elementary school teacher in Palo Alto his entire career, saying that he felt that too much money was being spent on administration and not enough on direct efforts to improve the actual education of our kids. He refused to become a principal or any part of administration because he felt so strongly about this. Note that this was back in the sixties and seventies. We pour more than half of our state budget into schools and we are much worse off now than we were then. In general, people seem to be willing to pour more money into just about everything these days without determining whether it is achieving the goals and positive results that citizens expect. In general, we do not hold people accountable for getting results that they promise or that we want. Why not? It's very puzzling like you said. When are we going to wake up and demand results? I don't know if we ever will. But there seems to be a strong movement today that that is moving in that direction - I hope people continue to wake up. Remember, the facts are what matter.
