I was almost hit on my bicycle when I was riding downhill at 47 mph by a pickup truck. The police couldn't do anything as they didn't witness this incident. Three weeks later, the driver ran a red light seriously injuring the other driver. Turns out the truck driver had 6 (IIRC) previous suspended license tickets. I also saw him driving to/from the San Jose court house for these court hearings. I don't know the extent of the injuries to the other driver but that could have cost her $100k plus in medical bills as the truck driver isn't covered by insurance due to having priors. He's also isn't overly wealthy. The truck driver got 3 weeks in jail. What incentive does he have to stop driving and injuring others now? None! If a driver does not have insurance, jail them. All of them. They are reckless and a danger to other drivers.

The first comment responds to the new reported policy of only charging driving on a suspended license as an infraction. Maybe the DA will distinguish between suspended licenses for minor offenses and suspended licenses based on serious offenses such as dui. But even a suspension for lots of traffic tickets should be enforced BEFORE INNOCENT PERSONS ARE KILLED OR CRIPPLED. Far more innocent persons die from reckless driving than from murder.

I am confused:

I always thought that the job of any District Attorney was to enforce the law.

Not to legislate.

Santa Clara County's Jeff Rosen is an activist who is acting up on his own, often mistaken, and even racist agenda.

What a travesty of justice...

Ok. Let's follow the logic here.

Too many minorities are getting arrested for driving without a valid license.
Too many minorities are getting arrested for failing to pay fines.

Let changes these from misdemeanors to infractions which are punishable by MORE FINES.

You know, because these people have already demonstrated a solid record to pay their fines in the past. Let's give them more fines.

I can't see what could go wrong.

The difference between sitting in a jail cell and owing the county THOUSANDS in fines isn't very different. Once the system has you it's hard to get out.
