Teenagers have no school to attend to and perhaps find the protest and firework the most fun outdoor event to participate in the past 2 and half months lock down period. Meanwhile essential business workers, owners are stuck in the traffic after a long day.

I have so many questions. Does this have to be about race instead of criminal conduct by police? Was this death racially motivated? Would there still be protests if the victim wasn't a black man?

Protesters should not block traffic. The freeway is no place to walk. Stick to safer avenues. And figure out what chances you propose - other than just a generalized greater respect for lives. And then, try to figure out how your city's police department operates. Is it any better that the Minneapolis Police Department - or just way more expensive?

What changes do you propose. New laws? New leaders? Different officers? Different training? New accountability measures?

If you choose to protest, please wear masks and please bring extra masks for other people.
Over 20,000 African Americans have died of COVID-19, the largest hit group. Social activism is about making positive change, and at least, and do no harm, so don't bring back a silent killer into the homes of the very people you seek to be allies to. Although one is outdoors, close proximity over extended periods of time and shouting add to the risks. Stand up for your beliefs, just do it safely.

We need to keep the focus on the murder of a black man by a white police officer. This is not the first, but we know about this murder because of the video. Please educate yourselves about systematic racism. A good place to start is watching the Netflix documentary "13th" about the Thirteenth Amendment to the constitution. Our country must face our racist attitudes.

Different protesters are protesting different things. The last poster is concerned about racism. Checking online, I see a report that in 2016 police killed about 1,100 people. Most of those killed were white. What proportion of the deaths should have been avoided? I don't know. Does anyone think the police should never kill anyone?

So we know the police should not have killed George Floyd. But sometimes police are forced to kill people to protect themselves or others from imminent death or serious injury and to apprehend suspects who do not choose to surrender. It is the job of stopping crimes in progress and apprehending suspects that separates police officers from private citizens.

Gary, until white men like you admit we have systematic racism in this country there will be no change, please watch Netflix documentary "13th" and Floyd wan not the only one recently. Educate yourself, open your heart! Web Link
Also a good book to read about immigration from central America is a historic novel "The Border" by Doug Winslow- Americans are dying from covid- we need compassion not more right-wing rhetoric. No justice No peace

I can't agree more with you Senior Veteran.
The reality is that even though our constitution was revised to enable "equal rights", it has never REALLY happened.
There have been loophole made, promises made, and even laws passed that don't get enforced equally.
WHY?
Because it is social stratification, one group of people want the majority power influence over the rest. The 1960-1970s that group got threatened by "uppity" kids in college, thus the college education systems lost public funding.
When high school students started, the public education system was short funded. Which has led to the problems in education today, and that the majority of our population is not prepared nor allowed to be educated enough to see what is going on in our government.
Just look at the movie "idiocracy" it is extreme, but elements are here today.
White upper class people were willing to give up some power, but real equality, they cannot tolerate.
It is a false promise.

We have a president who thanked and re-tweeted "The only good democrat is a dead democrat" This is inciting violence! My question is how can we get white men who have been hypnotized by Fox news to grow some internal compassion. There are so many issues that need to be addressed. The hatred needs to stop.

Ok "Senior Veteran" I will watch the documentary you cite. I did just listen to your link to a presentation on NPR. 1,100 people each year in America are killed by police. How many deaths were avoidable consistent with the job given to police? How many died while being detained or arrested for minor offenses? How many cops were killed by others in the line of duty? How many homicides not by police were there in 2019 in America? The officer arrested for killing George Floyd was himself a "veteran." Did he have useful training or the opposite in the military? Maybe there should be citizen review panels to interview prospective officers - and those hired previously. What do you propose? Don't hold your breath waiting for Fox News junkies to agree with much of anything you post. But it may be useful to not jump to conclusions about others posters. Some of us like raising issues for consideration.

REMINDER: STAND UP AND KNEEL FOR RACIAL JUSTICE
6:00 pm-8:00 pm -- Friday, June 5, 2020
Castro Street and El Camino Real, Mountain View, CA
Mountain View Voices for Peace and Justice
This protest will be non-confrontational and non-destructive, but it will probably be loud. We expect participants to hold up signs, chant, and keep an appropriate social distance. People who feel unsafe in crowds – a reasonable concern during the pandemic – will conduct a “rolling rally,” driving by with signs displayed on their vehicles.

Last night, June 4th, hundreds of mostly young people marched for George Floyd and Black Lives Matter from San Antonio to Castro and back again. This happened in Mountain View. This happened without rioting or looting, as far as we know. Why didn’t the voice cover what happened right here in our city? Why didn’t you write about this? Does it take looting to get any notice? That would be sad.
