I'm sorry but it's just embarrassing to be asked to believe that high school seniors deserve anything other than to shelter in place and follow social distancing guidelines. Their lives are not over. Hopefully they've learned even greater lessons during this pandemic as well and their schools have taught them to be responsible and thoughtful citizens willing to sacrifice a few things for the greater good and empathize with the need to protect others. They've only asked to stay at home for a few months. There's no shortage of food or entertainment or lack of internet. They haven't been asked to go fight for their country and put themselves in harms way in a foreign land. Surely they are as strong as previous generations. Hopefully stronger.

I think it's a great idea. We are not returning to normal any time soon and this is a reasonable solution for our young adults to enjoy this rite of passage. The author is acknowledging safety by stating the amphitheater can limit the attendance and seat people apart. How many of us cried for our seniors when the graduations cards arrived from Jostens?

Related idea for any MV school doing graduation ceremonies would be the concert parking lots. Several local schools have done lovely car-based graduation for immediate family in their cars, cars all decorated, graduates cheering from on top their cars, with traditional speeches, and all.

Good students will be getting other degrees. For now, SCHOOL'S OUT (1972). Going forward, the more serious question is whether schools and football games and celebrations and ceremonies should ever resume as before in the face of the coronavirus and other viruses and threats that have been downplayed for decades.

Agree, that's a great idea to use Shoreline Amphitheatre for school graduations! Huge stage to walk across, plenty of wind, ample seating and parking. I disagree with Le Dude who says they should just suck it up. This year's seniors have lost out on Prom, Graduation, end-of-year award ceremonies, and the all-night Grad Night party that parents have spent the last year planning. Excellent idea to use this huge, safe, vacant outdoor space right here in Mountain View.

This is a great idea with one extra - wear face masks. Le Dude is missing the point, as it is a safe way to social distance and celebrate - and not everyone is an introvert who likes to sit in front of their computer or tv; and trying to equate it to war (I presume the draft of the historical Vietnam war [many are still called to foreign lands to fight for our freedoms]) is nonsequitur.

Alice Cooper is still singing SCHOOL'S OUT. Catch it online. If you want your 2020 high school graduate to walk across a stage, rent or buy one yourself. It could be good exercise for the whole family.. Keep it within the family and you can even skip the masks.
