Chambers of commerce seek federal aid in a struggle for survival

Original post made on Apr 29, 2020

The first weekend in May usually marks a major fundraiser for the Mountain View Chamber of Commerce, the exuberant downtown A La Carte and Art street fair. But this year, Castro Street will be a ghost town.

Absolutely RIDICULOUS.

A TRADE ORGANIZATION IS A LOBBYING GROUP.

These guys fake the public into thinking they are government agencies.

Then they use the City Council by BUYING the candidates to to funnel taxpayer money into their memberships for profit businesses.

THESE GUYS ARE NOT EMPLOYERS THUS SHOULD NOT GET PAYROLL PROTECTION ACT FUNDS.

A DEMOCRAT lobbies for a for profit lobbying organization...and yet a reader whine about Trump and corproations. A couple dozen more readers clap their appendages and give it a thumbs up.

No wonder someone coined the phrase Trump Derangement Syndrome

I am a registered independent and I want to make it clear:

I am against any lobbying especially when the lobbyist is using accounting trickery to claim they are working for a non-profit.

Unfortunately the Supreme Court says money is free speech.

Absolutely insane, thank CITIZENS UNITED.

Our government is a for profit enterprise for candidates, the elected, the interest groups and the corporations, even when you lose. THe ones that always lose are the ones with no money.

If they can demonstrate the need (no reserve -including PAC funds-, no line of credit...), don't have a fundamental issue with assisting them in keeping as many employed as possible (a job is a job).

But it's probably a moot point since all PPP loans have probably been spoken for.

However, the letter grossly underestimates the true amount of lobbying spent.Let's not forget that some of these non profits (not our local Chamber but many others including the SJ/SV chamber) run separate and very well funded PACs (at the last primary, our mailboxes were full of their pamphlets).

Didn't take much work (ie trumpian grifting) to steal the original from the 90's, when so many hard-rightwingers had CDS.

Clinton Derangement Syndrome

Of course, the 80's had much creative wit to share, such as Graydon Carter's famous description of a NY real estate huckster who would go on to bankrupt so many companies:

The Short Fingered Vulgarian.
