Many of us work hard. Some of us were lucky enough to buy homes when the average family could afford them.

A lot of other people work hard, but for a variety of reasons have fallen on hard times.

Fortunately, most Mountain View residents recognize the importance of supporting our less fortunate neighbors. And now, during this public health emergency, people recognize that it's important to keep people housed and provide services to the unhoused to protect us all from the spread of COVID-19.

So long as the "rent assistance" checks are made out to the tenant and the property manager, I see no problem.

Did I miss the funding for ventilators? Or masks? Or the supplies of the Hydrocloraquine 'Trump Pill'?

We seem to have gone all the way for renters and completely ignored the huge amount of medical supplies we are going to need in the coming weeks.

The rent assistance IS for landlords mostly. Tenants who cannot pay or prefer to not pay ARE NOT PAYING and cannot be evicted for the time being.

Just watch, the City Landlord will threaten the City with a lawsuit if the City doesn't pay these people. Just look at the story I found here titled "Upland repeals ban on evictions after landlords threaten to sue the city" on the "Daily Bulletin" found here (Web Link

This is probably what is going on at the City Council. They are being threatened by the landlords that if the City Council does not use the City money to pay for rent, the City will be sued.

Of course, under this situation, I would almost guaranty that the courts will not take any action against the City. But the City Council will instruct the City Attorney not to defend the City because the City Council majority are paid representatives of the landlords.

What a joke.

Laws requiring business closure are costing trillions of dollars - but it is a cost of doing business in this country - like others - under attack from a virus. Every dime paid by tenants to landlords - with or without government assistance - is a dime more than most business operators are receiving. So far, no city or county or state or other government has directed that landlords bear any loss of income - just that they must wait to be made largely "whole" for some months. The City Council in San Jose considered ordering a waiver of rent instead of just a sometimes available delay in when it is due. The City Attorney advised against it as going too far. In Mountain View, city councilmembers would not even think of waiving rent. In fact, they did mot even consider delaying when tenants in trouble would need to pay. The County Board of Supervisors passed an emergency ordinance restricting 3-day notices to pay rent or "quit" (get out) and delaying when unpaid rent could be collected. And California courts will generally not currently issue a "summons" requiring any tenants to respond to quick eviction ("unlawful detainer") lawsuits. Those are the current limits. Tenants who can pay the rent, should pay the rent and not get behind. Otherwise, tenants may end up being evicted after some months - many losing their rent-restricted apartments here in Mountain View when they cannot make up for all of that unpaid rent in the months ahead.
