The wage that de Anza pays us is well under the standard wage in Cupertino, which is kinda passive aggressive that forces us not to work on campus. Since the wage is lower than the standard wage in Cupertino, we can’t get the service as quality as those off campus.

This is why we need local journalism -- how else would this ever come to light?

Paying college students that little is really unfair. My 15 year old daughter makes $16/hr at her after school job in Palo Alto. Some of the jobs described here require far more skill and yet the students make far less.

I bet this story is preliminary to another planned by the rich empire that is the Foothill-De Anza community college bureaucracy. The empire wants more money so maybe - perhaps - possibly they could give some more money to local or foreign students who are doing some kind of work. The story says over 800 students "worked" at De Anza last year? Doing what? Parking their own cars? Fill us in.

I’m confused. Why would there be international students coming here on international visas to study at community colleges in California? I thought these were local community educational institutions. I never considered looking into a community college in Colorado, for example -

The answer is simple-UC. You can transfer from De Anza/Foothill to, for example, UC Berkeley and save a lot while getting your UC Berkeley diploma.

You want 'to legally force' the Community College Board to discuss Min. Wage, even take action?

It is easy. BEFORE THE ELECTION, ASAP. Write a letter and invoke some magic legal words* "Under Education Code 72121.5 I request this matter be put on the next Regular Meeting agenda." Ask for something short and succinct "Minimum Wage: Discuss making the minimum wage in this District match the County Minimum Wage, and take action on directing the staff to return with such a Policy for a vote at the next meeting."

less than $250 per parcel over the next 5 years (total!). The Community Colleges get less per-student than even K-12th grade schools. A shame, I think.

ah oh - Actually, looks like the County - does not have a minimum wage. So just "median of minimum wage used by Palo Alto, Mountain View, Sunnyvale, Los Altos, Cupertino, San Jose". All of these cities are (I think) within the FH-DA district and all have reasonably similar rates above the state's.

I haven't vetted this truth outlet - but the numbers seem about right

@Steven Nelson - The Foothills/DeAnza board could pick any minimum it wants although most cities it serves are at (or above) $15...with a few exceptions like Los Altos Hills.

Los Altos Hills (home of Foothills College) is at State Level for minimum wage. Their City Council recently refused to raise it as irrelevant to their town.... right after discussing Students' homelessness
