What would it take to offer overnight parking to homeless students at Foothill College? $830K and political will

Original post made on Jul 3, 2019

Foothill College President Thuy Nguyen says questions remain about the financial and operational challenges created by Assembly Bill 302, which would allow community-college students to sleep overnight in campus parking lots.

Am I misunderstanding this? The proposal is to spend $830k a year for homeless students to remain homeless, just in a different location?

This program introduces nothing to structurally change lives when the problem isn't temporary.

Stupid is as stupid does. Only the California legislature could come up with such a dumb solution. It just legitimizes and sets in stone a problem rather than solving anything. It's right up there with trying to tell cities they can't tow cars parked longer than 72 hours. At this rate, California will become a homeless encampment and the joke of the nation.

My gosh how wonderful the state is finally stepping up to do something about this homeless crisis! Student homelessness is such a big issue that I am glad we are talking about spending this amount to help this problem! We really do need to make CC parking lots open 247 to accommodate all the minorities and unfortunate people that need this service! Sure, $800K is a lot, but it is so drastically needed and will increase the living conditions for our fellow car-dwellers! It's not a major project or anything... It will definitely not attract criminals and felons to that area...

This leaves too many questions unanswered.
How many students are we helping with the $830K? 1? 83? 830?
Where were these students before entering the community college? Why can't they continue to stay there?
Calling it an "overnight parking" solution seem a misnomer. How many nights in a row can they stay? 1-5 days is not really a problem. 7-30 days is awkward. 30+ days and you have started a homeless camp on our college campuses.
