Stanford student allegedly paid $6.5 million for admission

Original post made on May 2, 2019

The family who paid the most to get their child into a selective college as part of a national college admissions scandal was identified on Wednesday by the Los Angeles Times as a Chinese family whose daughter gained admission to Stanford University.

Guess ROI on that investment did not work out. And why sailing? Niche sport in China, weird choice. Would be interesting to do an audit of donations to top tier schools and do a cross reference of student names admitted around same time period. I mean how many individual donors give hundreds of thousands to a school, but I suppose they have a way to work the system, they always do.

Affluent foreigners buy their way into the USA, while impoverished people and their kids are locked up in cages for trying to find a better life, free of violence and brutality. What a great country we live in.

This is all shocking and i am sure this is not an isolated case. There are lot more cases like this all over the country. Unfortunately, the colleges failed to put strict control on their own people. There is already a system of people donating millions to these colleges and getting favors in return for their children or relatives. SO, there is not a big surprise if we look at that angle. This whole process is totally unethical and pure corruption but it has been going on for a long time. It is time the schools take this issue very seriously and stop all this quid pro quo schemes completely and make the system transparent to restore fairness and trustworthy.

@veryupset - “This whole process is totally unethical and pure corruption“. The whole process is not corrupt. The VAST majority of kids admitted to these schools get in on their own merits so not fair to condemn the whole system based on a few bad apples. There will always be legacy admissions or accommodations for kids who’ve made large donations but even those kids are typically qualified to matriculate. And there will always be cheaters, it’s just a fact of life.

How much did Stanford receive of this $6.5 million? None. This is a poorly worded headline.

So we're OK if the parents pay the money DIRECTLY to the school?

But pay a third party and it's bribery.

Amazing logic. Whatever helps you sleep.

"So we're OK if the parents pay the money DIRECTLY to the school?

So, you don't see any difference between someone giving a huge donation to a school that will aid in the education of all (or many) other students and someone who pays a third-party loads of money to produce false documents and who then pays individual teachers bribes to get them to help slip by the admissions rules?

The whole "legacy" student issue is also one of setting admission rules so that it encourages people to donate to the school in ways that help the school do it's job for all students.

The basic issue is that as long as private schools exist, then we have to accept that some percentage of student admissions are guided by what will financially benefit the school as a whole so that the school can do a better job of educating students.

I'm not saying I like this reality, but I have yet to hear of any better Solution?
Have you?

Just curious, what have parents been spending on average to get their kids into Bullis?
