Terrorism against pedestrians or was there an additional motive?

I think this is the first time I've seen "the El Camino Real" with the redundant "the" in two languages. Why "the El Camino Real" but not "the Old San Francisco Road"?

The writer is probably a SoCal transplant where all the highways, named or numbered, get a “the” before them. ECR is a state highway after all. Just a writing style thing. Kind of like how in the south many say say, “on tomorrow”. Grammatically correct, but sounds weird.

On another note, I can’t help but wonder how low the sun was in the sky at the time of the incident. ECR is notorious for blinded drivers headed Westboumd shortly before sunset.

@Grammer Police, someone intentionally plows into 8 pedestrians and your overriding concern is use of "the" and "el" in the same sentence?

There's a time and a place for proofreading, and this is not one of them.

I hope the victims recover from the physical and emotional wounds of this horrific incident, and I hope the police and FBI are able to make sure the driver fully experiences the consequences of his actions.

@Grammer Police

I agree. The MV-Voice needs to send this reporter back to English 101. Words are important and this is an important story.

Another day, another terrible vehicle-pedestrian accident on El Camino Real. But LASD thinks it is safe for our children to cross El Camino.

Did anyone in the SVPD consider this could be a case of on of the following issues? 1. seizure 2. stroke 3. heart attack. Why are they jumping to terrorism in Sunnyvale California?

I have been closely following this story since it happened and it's obviously very sad for all involved: the injured, the family of those injured, the witnesses, the driver and his family as well. I have read that the driver is a war veteran, has done a tour in Afghanistan and has PTSD for which he was hospitalized for previously.

While there's absolutely no taking back what he did and it's very hard to feel sorry for him, understand he is human too and was clearly suffering. Humans are constantly doing horrible things to each other and to everything else that exists on this planet.

So, please don't make the situation worse by making assumptions or hiding behind your computer writing hateful comments. Please think before you speak and let's all try to be rational human beings here. Thank you.

Let’s give the police some credit... Why do you assume they are jumping to conclusions? They have the driver in custody and would have determined seizure, stroke, or heart attack. This isn’t their first rodeo. There must be something sketchy if they brought in the FBI.

I hope everyone injured recovers fully and fast.

El Camino is anything but Real. It is crumbling and falling apart. It is an obstacle course of potholes and debris in Santa Clara.

The driver's family said he suffered from PTSD. It is sad for all involved.

The Alameda. The Dalles Avenue. The Americana. Some streets are “The” like The Royal Road.

"The" El Camino Real is absurd on its face and blatantly incorrect.

Or from San Francisco. Whose best-known newspaper's Peninsula edition has (or did when I was reading it) a section titled "Along the El Camino."

And in So. Cal. it's shortened from a full phrase like "the 405 freeway," which makes sense (405, in particular, gets most of the commute-time accidents, so it's named constantly on radio traffic bulletins). But that still doesn't work with ECR, because it's not an ECR Something (like El Camino Real highway), just ECR.

Chalk it up with those other popular gaffes like "the hoi polloi," "Bridge on the River Kwai," "DC current," etc.
