Original post made on Apr 25, 2019

In view of a hulking manzanita tree branch hung from the wall at the Unitarian Universalist Church in south Palo Alto, mayors and other elected officials from Redwood City to Sunnyvale met with transportation program leaders from the area's biggest employers on Thursday, April 18.

Two huge wins for trip-reductions occur to me, which don't compromise business or family needs:

a) More work-from-home, say two days a week. This helps businesses who might otherwise be reluctant, because it reduces their facilities footprint which can be hugely expensive. Also, it improves the quality of life of workers, who would in-effect go to work instantly the moment their work days starts - with zero time wasted commuting; in this example two days per week eliminates 40% of their commute burden. This generates a ride-reduction of 40% for eligible workers.

b) Companies can sometimes switch the work schedule from five 8-hour days to four 10-hour days. This offers workers who do have to commute four round trips a week instead of five, cutting their personal cost of fuel and bridge tolls by 20%. This generates a ride-reduction of 20% for eligible workers.

In my mind, these are both examples of Lean thinking... from Japanese manufacturing: Find the simplest low-tech (and therefore low-expense) solution, but train your mind to always look for small ways to make things faster, smarter, or easier for the operator - same benefits from any system, yet with fewer inputs.

We are not proposing a sacrifice mentality, which people tend to resist. We are talking about a better quality of life, which also happens to create respectable trip-reduction numbers, before ever spending more on capital-intensive solutions.
