SafeSpace has opened three sites under a Headspace-type model in San Mateo County during the same time period that Stanford has been “preparing” to open its first center. With regard to finding a provider, one has to wonder why Children’s Health Council which has built a significant youth mental health program in our county and already has an existing partnership with Stanford is unwilling to step into this role. And neither our County Hospital nor Stanford Children’s Hospital will hospitalize a youth who is having a mental health crisis. Shameful.

Have any of the wealthy Google’s, Facebook’s, etc in our area been asked to provide funding for some of these projects? It is their products that are contributing to the rising anxiety and depression in our adolescents. I think they might be willing to help increase services for our kids.

@Sarah1000. A bit of research on headspace shows that Safespace is not at all the same as headspace. Safespace services seem narrowly focused and spread out in different locations; not even close to the headspace model. And it's not just Stanford that's developing the new youth mental health centers, it's a partnership between Stanford and the County. Really looking forward to what headspace, now allcove has to offer our youth.

Ian- The founder of headspace, Chris Tanti, is a founding advisor of SafeSpace. SafeSpace is affiliated with Bay Area Clinical Associates which has an excellent community reputation for providing youth and TAY mental health services. I have been to two of the SafeSpace locations. They are beautiful and welcoming and a psychiatrist was present at one and a psychologist at the other. And they offer free assessments- among many other supports for youth and their families. If the Stanford/County partnership ever results in actual services, I hope the focus will be on care rather than on research.
