What happened to this newspaper's policy of not naming people arrested but not charged with a crime? "Drunk in public" is hardly newsworthy. Are you trying to imply that a dangerous foreigner is living in our community? Mr. Toledo has a PhD from Stanford and has been living in Los Altos for at least the last 10 years. He served as president of Peru from 2001-2006.

I'm sure it was simply too titillating for the staff not to run the story w/ the name
Right now they're thinking about how they can back-step and cover their butts instead of saying "Oh yah, we did say that. We made a mistake in naming him."

How uneducated you two are. That “rule” doesn’t apply to public figures!!

Idiots!

So instead of the "rule" being totally arbitrary, they get do decide someone is a public figure or not...arbitrarily!
Now we all can see. Very clearly as a matter of fact ;)

I’m fairly certain that “former president of a major South American country” fits any reasonable non-arbitrary definition of “public figure”. And he’s not helped by the fact that he’s wanted on corruption charges in Peru...

What's the arbitrary measurement is used to make the call on who is a public figure? Who gets to arbitrarily make that arbitrary decision?

Everyone is presumed innocent. This is salacious pandering.

Just another former corrupt political leader downing a few pitchers of beer at a popular Menlo Park hamburger joint.

At first I thought the incident was being reported from The Flea Street Cafe.

What probably happened when he was asked to leave....

"Don't you know who I am?" Toledo demands.

"No. Now get out of here or we will have to call the police." the Dutch Goose staffer replied.
