Preschool poised for major statewide expansion

Original post made on Jan 27, 2019

Just three days after taking the oath of office, California's new governor laid out an ambitious plan to create statewide, universal access to preschool -- a hefty investment lauded by lawmakers and education advocates as an important step toward closing the achievement gap.

Um, yeah, and who is going to pay for this? Google? Apple? We already pay some of the highest taxes around.

Or perhaps we apply all the suggestions I've read regarding rent control.

Don't expect hard working people to subsidize your kids. If you can't afford to live here, move away. And ditto for families with children. If you don't make enough money to live here and care for your own children without taxpayer assistance, then why demand the rest of us work harder to pay for them?

What I really mean is is you can't keep taxing childless citizens for childcare programs for people who create children they cannot pay for.

Thank you Senator Jerry Hill and Assemblyman Marc Berman for thinking about the future of California and the Bay Area. My son who has special needs will be a productive professional member of society in part due to a wonderful public preschool.

Clearly the other people didn’t read that “$1 invested [in early education] brings back a $7 return down the road.” This is simple economics backed up by several studies. Educated people get jobs and contribute to society rather than costing society, Uneducated people have trouble finding work,and are statistically much more likely to commit crimes. Police, the court system and jails cost money. Reducing crime and poverty saves money.. Even if you care nothing about children and only love money you should want to invest in early education, it’s a really good investment.

@Ellen

Which is exactly why you support abolishing Prop 13, right? If you can't afford to live here, just move away!
