Cheap cable and chain bicycle locks are really useless. They can be cut in literally 2 seconds with a pocket-sized bolt cutter. Stop crime by buying your kids U-locks and teaching them how to use them properly. Also, demand that schools install bike racks that are compatible with U-locks (not those cheap bike racks that only hold the bicycle wheel).

Why not adding some cameras? These days these are fairly inexpensive. Ask Google for some Nest outdoor cameras and write some nice article about it.

Egan locks their bike cages from 8:30-3:00. No bikes are stolen from that time.
If this school is experiences stolen bikes that can’t fit in the cages, even if they lock them, they need more cages. Such a simple solution!

Does anyone know what "Gomez said the school added another bike cage as a preventative measure last week, and that she advised families to purchase a U-lock to secure bikes in the interim" means? Does "added" mean purchased, but not yet installed? Will it be installed before the end of Christmas vacation?
