A waste bucket cracks open a foul problem

Original post made on Nov 16, 2018

Last month, a byproduct of Mountain View's most vexing problem plopped right in front of a Shoreline West house. It was a sealed five-gallon Orchard Supply Hardware bucket left not far from the sidewalk.

Whatever you do, don't post a comment disparaging the RV dwellers -- either the Editor or the Snowflakes will have your comment removed.

"This has become a highly visible public health and safety issue, and the city's first responsibility needs to be to its tax-paying (and regulation-abiding) residents and businesses." ... Amen! Someone was finally brave enough to come out and speak the truth. Enough is enough. Hopefully, our new city council will listen to its tax paying constituents and start to address these issues in a way that also shows respect to those of us who pay our rent, mortgages and taxes. Regarding the waste dumping program ... let's be real here and call it like it is ... it wasn't "free" .... it was a taxpayer-funded program. Nothing "free" about it.

While dumping itself is a crime, we also need to be more responsible and empathetic to our less fortunate neighbors. That point seems to be clearly missing from this article and the Mt View NIMBY crowd. The waste dump program needed UX design help, like most of the local cities including the City of Mt View. It wasn't a bad a idea, it was poorly done.

“it hard to say whether the problem is getting worse”
Yep, it is very hard to say aloud.

Can we call the MV Public Works Department to tow away and dispose of all of those waste-generating RVs clogging our streets and fouling our environment, bicycle/traffic safety, and quality of life? As I remember, we have a SMART recycling station in Sunnyvale. Can we use it to recycle All of the trash on MV streets???

Since the Mountain View Public Works Department is hastily picking up and cleaning up toxic waste from illegal on-street RV's, can it also bypass the City Council and also hastily tow away and destroy all RV's and other vehicles infesting MV streets? There's a GREAT SMART Center for recycling waste in Sunnyvale. Can't we just tow them all there to be destroyed?

"The mess was cleaned up in less than a half hour after she called up the city's Public Works Department." So, why can't we also use the Public Works Dept to clean up the rest of the filth??? All of the RV's and other on-street dwellers infesting MV streets and getting useless and expensive "social services" care of the MV City Council? Just tow all illegal vehicles down to the SMART Center in Sunnyvale in "recycle them". As for their residents??? I really don't care as long as they're not infesting MV.

Mayor Siegel is actually puzzled by his massive loss in this election? Really? Siegel refused to do anything to lessen or even control the vehicle dwellers on MV streets and the vast majority of voters were sick of his arrogance and lack of understanding and action.

He actually states: "I wasn't expecting this to have a major impact on the race, but it probably cost me and Showalter some votes". No, Mayor Siegel... it didn't "probably" cost you votes - it actually LOST YOU THE ELECTION.

Kristen (quoted in the article) has it right. "I really do feel like our desire to be compassionate is now being used against us, and it's not okay," she said. "This has become a highly visible public health and safety issue, and the city's first responsibility needs to be to its tax-paying (and regulation-abiding) residents and businesses."

I look forward to a Council that understands what "representative government" means and will act accordingly. As Kristen so clearly states, this is a "public health and safety issue" with the "first responsibility" needing to be to "tax-paying and regulation abiding residents and businesses".

It's pretty clear, given that the only anti-RV candidate, John Inks, lost the election in a landslide, that the vast majority of the residents of Mountain View don't agree with the angry people that post on the Voice. I doubt that will deter you from posting how this election clearly vindicates you, but reality is far different. Lenny is behind by less than 1000 votes out of 60000, so as much as you want to pretend, it just ain't the case that people agree with you.

I really hope that the 2019 Council has the wherewithal to reverse the “come on in AND park anywhere” attitude of the 2018 Council. I voted specifically in the hopes that the RV situation will be reversed. Council, please direct the PD & Code Enforcement to enforce the current laws and ordinance and stop this influx of RVs on city streets. Enough is enough!

Lenny you sided with the homeless and not the tax paying home owners. The writing was on the wall and you didn’t read it. Hopefully you will be an example for future mayors and counsel members. I could have done a better job. Bye bye.

Insist all you want, but if there were enough of you out there, John Inks wouldn't have been dead last by a large margin. Sorry, folks.

Uhhhh yah, this is a problem! Why are we not asking MVPD about waste incidents? I am confident the numbers are far more than what MVFD states. Soon to be x mayor did lose because he sided with RV’s over the real residents. If council doesnt change things more will be out!

Why then did the only anti-RV candidate lose so badly, dead last by thousands of votes? Simple fact: most of Mountain View disagrees with the grumpy posters on the Voice.

@Grumpy Minority, if you really think that RVs, parked on the city streets, is a good, normal thing, you are delusional. Can these RVs solve the housing crisis in Bay Area? No. Can people live in RVs? Yes, there are trailer parks with water and electricity hook-ups and sewage services for that. Living in RVs on a city streets makes live of RV dwellers miserable and creates unsafe conditions in the neighborhoods (traffic related, biohazard, etc.)

The RVs are a symptom of our housing crisis. If we built enough housing and had more affordable options, they wouldn't be present. They're providing housing options for people that would otherwise be on the streets or commute for hours into Mountain View. The same people complaining here about RVs complain about added housing ruining their "neighborhood character." When put to the test for the election, the only anti-RV candidate, John Inks, lost in a landslide, so I'll repeat again, the majority of Mountain View disagrees with the grumpy minority that posts on the Voice.

Lenny: you need to understand how dangerous and unpleasant the RV situation is for Mountain View residents, and that is why you lost. It isn't even compassionate to the RV dwellers to enable a lifestyle where buckets of waste are being set out.

Nick, if Lenny lost because of that, why did John Inks, the only anti-RV candidate, lose to him by thousands of votes? Facts don't care about your feelings, your election analysis, like that of the grumpy Voice commenters, is inaccurate.

Siegel is absolutely correct that his and Showalter’s lack of action on this matter cost them both votes in the election, and I am surprised that he is surprised by this. It also makes me think he isn’t in touch with his constituents.
Leaving a bucket of feces and urine for public access opens up a wide range of public health threats - Hepatitis A to name just one. Have we really tipped the balance where we are ok exposing the public to pathogens which schools and businesses train their employees on how to avoid?

Jamie/Nurse, that's precisely why council set up the waste disposal program. Unless you had something else in mind when you were talking about "action."

The only anti-RV candidate, John Inks, lost in a landslide. His proposed "action" was soundly rejected by Mountain View residents, so why do you think it vindicates you?

Lenny was tied to the RVs in more people's minds than any other candidate and he was soundly voted out because of it. Inks was tied to the developers more than any other candidate and THAT's why he lost big.

If anyone said they had a plan to rid the streets of RV dwellers and limit future mega development, the voter in MV would elect him or her Ruler Supreme and we would hold weekly parades to celebrate them!

That's quite revisionist. John Inks campaigned heavily on getting rid of the RVs, and he was the only anti-RV candidate. Just because his loss means that your pet issue wasn't actually a deciding factor doesn't mean that wasn't his position. Facts are facts, and the majority of people in Mountain View don't agree with the grumpy Voice commenters. Sorry that you have to face the fact that your echo chamber isn't representative.

Siegel is correct that both he and Showalter lost votes due to their lack of action on this issue. I am surprised that Siegel is surprised, and it speaks to how out of touch he is with his constituents.
Exposure to feces and urine has the potential to cause a number of public health concern including Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B and C, HIV, Salmonella, E. Coli, and Clostridium difficile ("C. diff"). Have we really tipped the balance so far that we are now allowing our residents to be exposed to pathogens which schools and businesses train their employees how to protect themselves against?

This has been an ongoing issue for quite some time that the city refuses to acknowledge. Why is it Los Altos has no RV issues but Mountain View does simple the Mayor and council choose to ignore it. Siegel is clueless to the problem and it cost him the election glad to see him go.

This is nothing new in Mountain View the city has turned a blind eye until they enforce the RV issue this will continue . We are now a third world country with people dumping human waste all over the city . Thank you Mayor and City Council.
