It’s starting to look like this election *isn’t* actually a flat repudiation of the progressive policies of the current city council, contrary to the loud voices that roam these comments.

@Close Race: Oh jeez. This WAS a repudiation, no matter how you try to spin it. Two outsiders are IN for sure, the mayor is OUT for sure, and the other incumbent MIGHT keep her seat by the skin of her teeth or not. That is not mixed, that is get in new blood, with a single incumbent possibly being able to scare up 1/6th of the vote. In the end I am not that worried about Showalter getting in or not, but this was definitely a signal that the voters want a different direction.

Let's hope the third-place spots flip back! I can't imagine another term for Pat Showalter, as she's shown to be tone-deaf to what Mountain View residents are saying and oblivious to the city's real needs. Her developer-backed campaign should have been enough to turn off most voters -- at least those who don't have some financial interest in projects the council will at some point vote on.

Inks and his conservative policies are still dead last in the race. Soundly rejected by pretty much everyone who even sniffed at a ballot.
One's policies are looked at more closely than just the need to get someone out.

I'm also hoping Showalter gets replaced as well to get some fresh ideas in.

It is a repudiation of Lenny Siegel and John Inks, for sure. Not since 2000 has a Mountain View city council incumbent been denied re-election. As for Pat Showalter,
if she does actually prevail over Alison Hicks, I hope she has learned something from this close call. Election to city council is not a blank check to break campaign promises and ignore the views of constituents.

It's fascinating how the grumpy minority in this comments section wholeheartedly believe no matter what the outcome, the lesson is the same. In reality, if the standings stay where they are, the incumbent and the incumbent's endorsed successor (remember Ken?) will have retained seats, with one new candidate replacing the other incumbent who was just behind them. A clear, strong endorsement by voters of the pro-housing policies put forth by these candidates.

I'm not endorsing any candidates, but my techie brain is unable to resist making some observations about your "pretty much everyone" claim. The math is simple - assume pretty much everyone who voted cast 3 votes. This is a good assumption.
This means, with the current standings, 57,842/3 = 19,280 people voted. Of those, roughly 35% cast a vote for John Inks. This is a far cry from "pretty much no-one". At 98% I'll give you "pretty much everyone", but not at 65%.

At which point my non-techie side whats to say what I have often said to my children. So I say "and how do you think that makes them feel when you say that? How would you feel if roles were reversed and someone said that to you?"

@DDD: Dude, where have you been. You don't have to be a Republican or a Democrat to remember that Broward county is FAMOUS for having these issues in counting votes and always lags WAY behind the rest of the state for who knows what reasons. They always just keep finding more votes to count. Either there IS something crooked going on, or they are just innocently INCOMPETENT!

Ron, I can't tell which is worse, if you actually believe that 100 people liked your comment or are just pretending. Actual votes, as we just saw, tell a much different story, and you can't just get more of those by clicking a button over and over again.

Vote them all out, they all suck and are backed by developers. They have collectively destroyed Mt View for the past 20 years.

They council all pretty much hate Mt View residents and been doing their best to make everything worse for law abiding tax paying citizens for 2 decades now.

Unaddressed is whether ballots being counted last were cast or received late in the process. I received a late mailer or two from Pat Showalter. Maybe that is why she improved slightly in the most recent counting. But if ballots being counted now could have been submitted at any time, Showalter may just have a 50-50 chance of staying ahead of Alison Hicks. Or we can just forget aboit it. Sleep for a week and look again when the counting is done.
