Council votes to allow pot shops in Mountain View

Original post made on Oct 5, 2018

A majority of Mountain View City Council members agreed Tuesday night to allow marijuana retailers to open up shop in Mountain View, parting company with other cities in the county that have sought a ban on the businesses.

Rosenberg said:" allowing marijuana stores follows through on a clear mandate by voters in 2016. Nearly two-thirds of Mountain View residents supported Proposition 64" --- Rosengerg doesn't know the math: 20,000 voted for proposition 64, 10,000 voted No. With 80K people live in Mountain View, we probably want to say only 25% residents voted for it. However, to be fair to other residents who didn’t vote or couldn't vote, we can not speak on their behalves. Unlike Rosenberg and other council people, who put words on others' mouths and who could not do the math, anyone with clear mind, can easily tell those councilmen are mis-leading the public. Even for those who voted Yes, they may not want people to get marijuana through legal channels, but they don't want so many stores to be opened in small town like Mountain View. To San Jose's no. of marijuana stores and the population as comparison, Mountain View should only open 1 location. San Jose only allows them to be in industrial areas. These 5 city council members are insane.

Typo in the above comment:

Even for those who voted Yes, they may want people to get marijuana through legal channels

To use San Jose's no. of marijuana stores and the population as comparison

I went looking for issues over the past 10 years with the stores in SJ and can't come up with anything negative in the press. They aren't seeing any issues. I would expect MV would have the same results if a similar plan is followed. They're highly regulated with security to make sure only those allowed in are allowed in. Clean, quiet, bright and cheery inside, No crowds, no loitering, no kids in the area at ALL Ever, from what I can see, no loud music, no crime, (unlike our current MV liquor stores). They're in the more industrial areas and close no later than 9PM, so you wouldn't even know they were there unless you went looking. When I'm there (Elemental Wellness if you want to see this "Frightening Boogie Man" yourself) I'm surrounded by, for the most part, other baby boomer customers. 75% I would guess.

Yes, I go to one to get my CBD products which DO NOT GET YOU HIGH. They have the THC removed entirely. I used to take an anti-inflammatory that was rotting my stomach so the doctor recommended I try cannabis. Guess what? It works better and zero side effects. Truth!

I'd rather my "Special city tax" go to my city, my home. As I get older it will be harder for me to get to SJ.

Proposition 64 legalized marijuana. It had nothing to do with opening stores in any particular location. Nuclear energy is legal in this country. Nuclear power plants may look nice and don't smell foul. It does not mean that we just have to build a nuclear power plant next to San Antonio shopping center.
Same with marijuana. Obviously the 5 councilmen don't understand that - which means they are idiots. Or they are hiding their true motives behind demagoguery - they are dishonest then.
So this becomes bigger than marijuana. Whether you personally like marijuana or not, you don't want idiots or liars on your city council. We gotta vote them out. In November, Lenny Siegel and Pat Showalter are on the ballot.

"Obviously the 5 councilmen don't understand that "
But YOU, you are capable of reading between the ballot and can determine what everybody THOUGHT they were voting for even though it was spelled out in the proposition. So everyone else was confused and uninformed because it seems the majority don;t think the way you do? Hmm.

I think it's more likely that the council looked at the data that we now have available and the lack of issues over the past decades of dispensaries operating in the area and decided to go with reality, based on real world examples instead of falling for the false fears of those opposed since those fears have already been proven to be based in false narratives and prophesies of doom that flat out did not happen.

Ju is a registered user.

Let it be approved by the FDA then it can sit inside a 'pharmacy' instead of a 'pot shop'. Then not a soul will complain. When it isn't legal enough that it requires a cop outside, then its worse than a gun shop. When the cops are working hard against irresponsible adults going high on drugs and DUI then why does the city want to attract more such folks? Spray paints are being locked up in department stores to prevent people using it to go high.. And the city wants to give easy access to a pot shop! The city council members proudly mention that...You need to be 21 years to get access to a pot shop. But do you think 21 year olds cant sell these to young high school kids in the area? Haven't you read the studies of which demographics use more marijuana? Go check that out first. Its turning into a vicious cycle by giving other benefits to low income families and then steering them toward a pot shop. How are we helping them come out of their shell? You want to corner them even more by providing them wrongful sources? And even give them opportunities to perform crimes and serve jail time and thus ruin their lives!!

Sunnyvale, Los Altos and Palo Alto has banned it completely. Shows their clarity and priority with their vision for high end growth. What kind of families will move into those neighborhoods vs ours? What kind of companies will invest into theirs vs ours? What kind of crimes are they looking to avoid vs ours? What kind of opportunities that they are creating for their future citizens vs ours?
Think think think....a 1000 times and think about 10,20,30 years down the road. My kids see the signs on buses saying 'marijuana is dangerous for pregnancies' but they will also see a pot shop down the street selling what is dangerous. My husband, myself and my neighbors all voted to legalize marijuana but did not vote for pot shops. Looks like MV city officials want to create a stagnant community and drive away those with a growth mindset.
I hope the men and women sitting on the official chairs with their heads buried down looking into just those no.of votes, will lift up their responsible heads and look around, listen to the voices and create a sense of safe community.

So, while we KNOW the last 20 years have not produced the problems you claim will happen.
It's been years and years, almost a complete generation since cannabis has been legal and there HAS NOT BEEN the problems the "Scare you to think my way" crowd has tried tpo play this issue.

People opposed to it will IGNORE the realities of what has (not) happened and try to scare you with false narrative proclaiming all sort of doom and gloom.
When it does not happen for an additional few more decades they MAY understand, but not likely. There will always be a fringe element who IGNORES the actual data we have available and will continue to use the only weapon they have left: Spreading fears that have already proven to be false. There's a reason they have nothing but anecdotal stories and proclamations of future doom. The problem is that the future has already played out wrt cannabis, and the fears and doom they professed 20 years ago...the ones that DID NOT happen, are the same false narratives they're spreading now.
