Why is this news? Because it was a Tesla?

Police pursuits with a capture will ALWAYS make the local newspaper. Read the whole story and it'll have less of a triggering effect.
...and if I had a Model X I'd wish someone would steal it too ;)

Did it crash because it was on AutoPilot? :-)

This should show more about the caliber of his mentality rather than anything else.
Teslas can be monitored by the owner on their phone app. They cannot really be driven by another unless they have the fob or the car is in Valet mode. Unlike other vehicles it cannot be filled at the local gas station and cannot be charged very easily.
It sounds more like a dare or perhaps an initiation of some kind rather than a serious robbery for gain.

It made the news because it happened in Los Altos and because it was a Tesla, crimes in affluent areas always make the news. Just like murders of affluent people are deemed to be more tragic and worthy of headlines than the down and out. Would be really surprised if this guy was sober.
