Good to see the Rengstorff neighborhood apartments back in the news for a classic stabbing. Been a while since the last one..

Only arrested. Not a public employee. In custody. Too soon to identify him, I suppose. But when he is charged by the DA with multiple attempted murder and released (or not) pending his trial in a year or five years, maybe the Voice will obtain and reveal the guy's name.

I know this has nothing to do with the story and is probably just a stupid and pedantic point, but when are local papers going to stop referring to 19 year old adults as "teens" in headlines? Both the headline and the lede should refer to this person as an adult male. I understand that listing his age is standard journalistic practice, but the connotation evoked by using the word "teen" is really unnecessary.

OK, pedantic rant over.

@Michael: Umm... he is nineTEEN, that is a teen. He might be able to be charged as an adult, but he is still a “teen” in most people’s minds.

If we want him to be in and out of jail for the rest of his life (at our cost), we'll treat him as an adult. We know male judgement is not well formed before age 25.

Not sure why it is such a big deal. It is public records information and easy for journalist or the for that matter anyone to figure it out really quick. Several watch groups access the records and publish them, In this case you can find the link on the SFGate page.

Question for Mr Forestieri or the Chief Editor. Why is this media’s philophy to withhold a suspect’s name or description when that information is readily available? It would be good journalism for any article to be as complete and informative as possible. I ask because I’ve noticed it more and more from your publication where this media appears to sensor names and descriptions where as the same more complete story may be run in a larger media outlet or format and there is a more complete picture of the events. I happen to notice the two readers comments above point out the same thing (sort of)and that one of the readers located the arrested person in another publication and you removed it. Comments? I know you have a very small audience but it is odd

I just hope the roommates are ok and they get this person evicted. There must be more to this story. Most likely alcohol or drugs. Or both. A little impulsive to stab someone over rent.

@Editors Question:

Embarcadero Media will generally not publish the names of individuals arrested by police or their mugshots until charges are actually filed by the District Attorney's Office.

There are some exceptions, all of which are subject to our editorial judgment: the arrestee is a public figure, a public safety or school employee; the arrest was for a major "violent" crime; the arrest was the result of an extended police or FBI investigation; or, as decided by the editor, the crime is of broad public interest or concern.

Michael,

I agree with Ron. 1) At age 19, he is still technically a "teen". 2) More importantly, as a 19 male, it is entirely probable that his prefrontal cortex has not fully matured, so his impulse control is not fully matured. I'm not saying that his actions should not have consequences, just that stabbing someone's hand should be assault and battery, and not attempted murder, and this 19 year old should not get 10-20 of hard time for this if it his first offense.

Why not use a consistent accurate policy for all articles?
1) Either never state race, or always state race
2) simply a 12 year old male or an 17 year old female?
3) Avoid the appearances to spin the news with classifications such as: teen, elderly, boy, girl, lady, man, gay, overweight, left handed, tall, short, green, trump supporter, republican, athlete, unemployed, wealthy, disabled, retired,middle aged person, Nazi, progressive, anarchist,
4) Present relevance. I can see , suspect, resident, homeless, disabled, wanted, armed, felon, murder, rapist, lobbyist, resisting, evading, escaped, but that is about all.
