Caltrain expands Bikes Board First pilot program

Starting this week, Caltrain is expanding a pilot program that allows bicyclists to board "bike cars" on trains before other passengers in an effort to make the transit agency's service more efficient.

That's a good start. They should take one step further and stop non-cyclists from entering bike car until all the bikes are on board.

To the extent that this program gives cyclists boarding preference over wheelchair users, it is illegal under the Americans with Disabilities act.

It's been a while since I used Caltrain as part of my commute, but I recall wheelchair access being on different cars from the bike cars. Has that changed?

Non-bicyclists can always use the non-bike cars to avoid the congestion at the bike cars. This new policy is a win-win for everyone if it helps keep the trains on schedule.

Riders with disabilities that need to use the lift will still have priority over all other riders. Why would you assume otherwise? And it's rare that Caltrain puts the bike cars that have the disability lifts on trains with high bike use.
