New principal selected for future Whisman school

Original post made on Jun 2, 2018

Mountain View Whisman School District officials have announced that Michael Jones, a former administrator in North Carolina and more recently the United Arab Emirates, will be leading the still unnamed, still unbuilt school on North Whisman Road.

I wonder what the going rate is for one of these jobs. To whom does an applicant make out the check?

Dr. Jones's international experience brings unique perspectives. All the new principals seem to offer talents we should welcome and support.

That said, it does not go unnoticed among teachers that not one of the five recent principal hires come from MVWSD's teaching ranks, versus many of the past principals had. This doesn't detract from the qualities the new leaders bring, but I hope the school board ask questions about the state of the district's internal leadership processes to grow and retain in house talent. We are losing talented mid-career educators.

@Christopher Chiang: Dubai to MV? 2 completely different societies, student groups. If he had past experiences in an Asian or Middle/South American country I would say : Bravo! Are these East Coast transplants interested in making a long term impact in MV? I doubt it. This is not a business, where employees are replaceable every 2 years, these are our schools, where children spend many years of their lives, parents investing a lot of volunteer hours and $ for special programs.I hope somebody is stepping up to run for school board in the fall. The current one made a lot of questionable decisions lately.

Polomom is right.

It's just plain naive to think any of Rudolph's friends from North Carolina are here for the long term. This is gig work. They will rotate in and out just like Rudolph. Get the line on the resume and get out. Nothing like experience working "in the heart of Silicon Valley" to add some flair. It's also way too expensive to make any sense. Their principal salaries will not support entry into the housing market. If anything, we are victims to a network that hires and promotes themselves at various jobs all over the country. Basic internet research will show that both Rudolph's and Jone's boss from North Carolina, Peter Gorman, affiliated with the Broad Center, has been placing his underlings all over the country. It's already been exposed that Rudolph has hired his ex-boss as consultant three years running now. That same boss or another colleague most likely already Rudolph's next post lined up somewhere else at the end of his five years here. In short, we are being played by an organized racket.

So the superintendent fired several popular, successful local principles and now he's bringing in one of his cronies. Is the school board asleep at the wheel? This is blatant nepotism and possibly illegal under hiring laws for government organizations. The most qualified person for the job just so happens to be the superintendent's old friend?

It would be wonderful to see additional members of the community get involved by running for school board.
Note that filing for the November election is August 10.

The Registrar of Voters is doing an info session on running for office on July 14: Web Link

I am happy to answer any questions on the process too.

Parents of the school district just got a email stating :"The Mountain View Whisman School District will begin a search for a new principal for Crittenden Middle School as current Principal Angie Dillman has resigned effective June 30, 2018..."
How can we lose so many school leaders in one year?!? Beginning in August, we will have 5 new principles in the school district. 5 out of 10!! What is going on in this district?

We are losing principal in this district because if they are not being scapegoated and then fired then ganged up on by the School Board with lies, the ones that are left, and who really know the truth, are looking around and thinking this ain't gonna stop so it's time to leave. In many ways, we just plain deserve this. Unlike Palo Alto we should never have just sat on our butts when we got clues that we had a superintendent that was woefully unprepared for the position. Botched construction planning, Teach to One, firing half the district's principals, poor communication, sabotaging the DI program in public, forcing boundary changes down everyone's throats, doling out jobs and consultant contracts to his buddies from North Carolina and now this.

November can't come soon enough. Vote out Wheeler and Coladonato. Send a strong message to the other sitting members. Let's take back our district!

This doesn't pass the smell test, or the duck test, or the appearance of cronyism. When will this superintendent be sent his way with a one-year severance of $250K?

I'm a bit worried - like former Trustee Chris Chiang expressed above, that 'close to' 100% of the new principal hires are from outside the ranks of MVWSD teacher employees with California administrative credentials.

Unlike Chris however - I recognize "the power of the purse" that the Board majority holds firmly in its hands, if it chooses. The Board may make it clear that they are going to refuse to approve the new salary - for a new principal. Sort of like the issue that the new state school facilities bond - issuance of new sales/spending - is in the frugal hands of Gov. Brown. The Superintendent "hires", but the Board may refuse to allocate any Budget to the salary of a prospective employee it does not want hired.

You cannot keep a professional workforce happy, if you always give promotions to outsiders.
