Putting the money borrowed ("bond proceeds") to "quick use" on any capital projects the District fancies may not help meet the overcrowding that may finally be coming. It is not just the "46" current housing projects. It is Mountain View's plan to keep adding thousands upon thousands of more jobs and housing units for giant corporations. And if the likes of California SENATE BILL 827 were to pass and become law, the population of the MVLA District could DOUBLE in just a few years as residential highrises are added most everywhere. As written, SB 827 would prevent cities and counties from stopping the construction of highrise condos and apartments near (half-mile from) transit hubs OR near (quarter-mile from) frequent bus stops - which may be added to any street such as Grant, El Monte, Middlefield, San Antonio, Foothill Expressway and Central Expressway. The bill would apply to 96% of bus "rich" San Francisco, for example. And local governments could not even require (under SB 827) that these imposing highrises have parking for any of the tens of thousands of new residents. The story that SB 827 "died in committee" on April 17 is for fools. The same committee that voted 4-6 with 3 not voting to not advance the bill on April 17 voted that same day 13-0 for reconsideration and, in any event, the truth is that the state legislature (senate and assembly) sets and suspends its own rules and can pass a bill (anytime in session) on little notice. The question would then be whether Governor Jerry Brown or his successor would go along. He probably would. And then the question would be whether a statewide referendum petition could be launched and gain the signatures to put the issue on the statewide ballot. And the corporations behind SB 827 would set a new campaign spending record to secure the new housing (under the bill) they want for millions of new workers they wish to import. But don't worry. Be happy. Pretend you never read this post or that it just ain't happening. Maybe get drunk. Become a drug addict. Go to the movies. Have a nice day.

Yeah, housing for the rest of us who weren't lucky enough to be born a few decades earlier when a studio was affordable and living alone wasn't an out of reach luxury. Perish the thought that long time Prop 13 recipients would have to suffer other people having a place to live.
