City projects to be studied under 'human rights lens'

Original post made on Apr 21, 2018

Mountain View officials will begin looking at the human rights impacts of various city projects -- but there's still some confusion as to exactly what that means.

Is it a human right to pull into Mountain View in an RV, call it your new home, and use it to sell drugs and harbor loaded AR-15's?

Is it a human right to know who is living in your community?

"Depending on the project, this could mean determining if residents are being displaced, minorities are disproportionately affected or small businesses that would be harmed"

Harming small businesses violates human rights? What if they're partnerships and not corporations and thus not people?

The City Can start by making the police department taking enforcement action against illegal parking that blocks, even partially, sidewalk disabled ramps. It happens daily and affects the rights of disabled people. But if you call the police, they will come out and do nothing so I'm not impressed.

Just what is "human rights" a socialist/populist code word for??? Are they dreaming up new laws without any Federal or State statutes, legal precedent, and especially competent legal oversight??? It's truly pathetic when residents no longer can trust the honesty, integrity, and good faith of the government and bureaucrats of the City of Mountain View.

William, you never disappoint. I love having our local, ridiculously old crank ranting about socialism and forcing 500 parking spaces per unit, frightened by the world. Keep up the good work!

Thank you to the City Counsel member who is working to represent Mountain View residents.

Human rights? Maybe we just need human decency. No matter the name, we need to consider people over corporations. It appears that we have developed a history of corporate interests over people and this is certainly a violation of human decency.

Looking into AirBnB is more like a tax revenue stream than human decency, as short term rentals can actually alleviate the housing crunch that has resulted from the practice of short term hiring by corporations, since it allows private homes to open up to for use tgat wouldn't be available otherwise. Taxing these would basically tax this source of affordable housing right out of the market.

Looking into the sale and use of public land by corporations is useful and important. Looking into the repeated sale of mobile home parks and older apartment buildings should be examined, as these house low income and minority groups.

Looking into the use of our public schools for private purposes is super important, as this practice has displaced many students from lower income families, while making way for private schools at a high cost. Meanwhile, middle and low income families have to drive across town to attend school since neighborhood schools have gone private. This worsens traffic, which is certainly a quality of life issue for all.

Looking into the use and sale of public local landmarks and open space to corporations should be investigated. Why is Hangar1 occupied by non-public corporate interests? Why is Hangar 1 naked? Why isn’t there parking and handicap access to Shoreline trail? Why is there a monster coorporation digging away to build housing in a public nature preserve? Why isn’t parking being considered in development? Why isn’t the quality of life of driving in town considered in development? Handicapped and elderly people need to be able to drive and get to things by driving. Why are all the parking lots so ridiculously designed that handicapped spots are too far from store entrances to be useful? Why are electric car charging stations given front row parking when only upperclass folks can afford these cars?

These are REAL human decency concerns and addressing these in our community is important.

Dear City Counsel, I challenge you to be the good guys, do the right thing and protect public assets and property, create open space for public use and cultural events.
