This might as well be an article about the Mountain View Whisman School District Office and Superintendent Ayinde Rudolph given all of the below quotes apply:

-"a 'toxic culture' of bullying, embarrassing sexual remarks and oppressive office behavior that has led to significant employee turnover.

-"routinely screamed at and berated employees."

-"talented, dedicated hard-working employees whose emotional and mental health declined because the culture was "constantly instilling fear in employees."

-"absolutely toxic. There were nights I would go home crying and even sought therapy."

-"Who's the big dog in the room? The hubris got bigger than the mission."

-"the board was not informed of any allegations of misconduct."

Clearly, the CEO, HR and possibly some Board members knew about this and looked the other way. They need to go!

I hope Mari Ellen Loijens is never hired by another nonprofit in the Silicon Valley ever again! Sure, she’d bring in the donations but at a very high cost to the organization = not worth it. The CEO, Emmett Carson, knew fully well what went on and allowed her to continue her horrible behavior because she brought in the money, which made him look good to the Board of Directors. She was allowed to fire one employee after the other as soon as they became pregnant or had a baby and returned from maternity leave. The CEO was fully complicit and should also resign! Horrible people!

To former SVCF employee—I am disgusted to hear this all happened in a charitable nonprofit environment. I am hoping but slightly cynical that the board does its job and fires the CEO. He is ultimately responsible. I am watching and hopefully not losing faith in the charitable sector the org represents. I would NEVER put money in the hands of SVCF.

Is the Voice still going to use the SVCF to administer its annual holiday fund? I'm not sure I want to be donating to this organization, even just as a pass-through.

It’s really unfortunate that all of this was absolutely true. Worst job I have ever had by far. This toxic/emotionally abusive environment was not only in Mari Ellen’s department but permeated the entire organization. Basically, routinely heard people crying in bathroom stalls etc. It was also widely known you could not trust the VP of HR to keep anything you said anonymous. I was warned by another employee in HR not to say ANYTHING to her!

The CEO needs to go! I’ve witnessed people coming close to confronting him about the toxic work culture and he simply shut them down. I’m convinced that he never treated those people the same way ever again. Hoping that HR and the board are also on the hook. Don Aguilar, who was the head of HR for the majority of SVCF’s 10 years in operation, surely got this feed back from employees’ exit interviews, but did nothing to make a noticible change. Shame in all the leadership staff for saving their own asses instead or helping those who didn’t have a voice!!!!!!!

It's horrible to be miserable in a job, to find yourself crying and hating being there. And it's everywhere! It is toxic, and managers above the person causing the problem are in cahoots and somehow fear the bully. I don't get it. After being laid off from a high-tech company awhile ago, the manager apologized to me for not taking care of a situation with an employee who made me (and others) sick every single day. She was supposedly my peer, but had so much power it was shocking. I loved the job, the responsibility and high level of trust, but it was impossible to do good work when I was being harassed and yelled at, sneered at, and put down in almost every conversation. Sometimes she would support me and confuse me no end. I hoped her good behavior was a sign of a turning point, but it never was. I got no support from HR, and when I was laid off (?) I was not surprised. Good for you worker-bees at SVCF for speaking out. I'm sorry this happened to you, and I hope you have recovered and are in good jobs. You all sound like terrific people, and any company should be grateful to have you as employees.
