About a year ago there was a reported pilot program about a high speed bus service from Gilroy, Morgan Hill, to Mountain View on 85 by VTA. There has been no follow up as far as I can see about this proposed pilot. Did it happen? What was the verdict? Is this now ongoing?

The VTA wanted to run a "high speed" line but only by removing the entire center lane of ECR from public use. The idea rightfully died.

There is a bus route now using 85 from Gilroy to Mountain View, according to their website. The full route takes just short of 2 hours.

@ECR, I wasn't talking about a route along ECR, I was talking about a sensible route that commuters could use from Gilroy to Mountain View which it appears is there. Take a look Web Link

For transit from Caltrain to N Bayshore, which is the biggest challenge, the vastly underutilized Light Rail system already exists, and it needs no new construction and land acquisition/leasing other than railbed and right of way across NASA Ames property. Why clog city streets with autonomous vehicles or invest huge $$$ in a risky high gamble when a very reliable and low tech solution already is at hand and begging to be used?

What does the Gilroy to Mountain View bus line do that Caltrain doesn't?

In response to Darin's question above...

The VTA's 185 route runs directly to a number of businesses in the Middlefield/Whisman area (e.g., Samsung), right to the heart of Google-land along Shoreline and Charleston, and right to Intuit along Marine Way at the western end of North Bayshore. (Map at Web Link By comparison, Caltrain from Gilroy runs to the main Mountain View station, and 2 of the 3 trips also stop at San Antonio station. If your destination is within walking distance to those stations you're all set, but if you're going to Whisman or North Bayshore you'll need to take a shuttle the rest of the way.

Also keep in mind that Caltrain only runs 3 northbound trips from Gilroy each morning. The VTA's 185 route also runs 3 trips northbound, at different times, including later in the morning. So the combination of Caltrain and VTA service doubles the amount of options from Gilroy to Mountain View.
