School district should rescind home schooling decision

Original post made on Mar 2, 2018

Last month, families with children enrolled in the Mountain View Whisman School District's home schooling Independent Study Program (ISP) learned that the district intended to scuttle the program in June 2019.

I don’t know who wrote this, but thank you! Seems like someone at the MV Voice is paying attention to this very frustrating decision that the board made without having any facts straight. It’s extremely troubling when someone in a position of power presents something falsely, either on purpose or due to a severe lack of understanding. I appreciate the two board members who questioned this decision, but wish no action would have been made until the members of the ISP program would’ve had chance to meet with Carmen Ghysels who clearly has an agenda against a valuable program she knows very little about. It would be hard to find a school that is more better aligned with the district’s 5-year strategic plan, than the ISP program.

I view Ghysels as an unnecessary carry-over from the district past. Not this valuable program. No community input or involvement as usual. Ironic how Ghysels is now the mouthpiece of the dirty work of the district office. What are her qualifications to even make such statements? Get a promotion and all of a sudden you're an expert on everything. FAIL

As the Chief Administrative Office, Superintendent Rudolph is, in-the-end, responsible for this major failure of his direct subordinate, Assistant Superintendent Ghysels. The Voice editors are correct, misinformation to the Board and the public, non-communication with the stakeholders:

For every public school district student of MVWSD, that is in a MVWSD school,
cost of ISP is less than ANY other district elementary public school student, by about $1,000 min. per student

Get the official 2017-18 data from the last page, of every School Accountability Report Card (SARC).
"Total Expenditures Per Pupil"

ISP $3,861
Stevenson $4,759
Bubb $5,085
Huff $5,146
...
Federal Title 1 schools that are LCFF "Target" schools and MVWSD "turnaround schools" get more to serve their bigger problems. Progressives love that, social Darwinists do not. I myself vote Progressive.
Theuerkauf & Castro >$7,000 just recently

My understanding is that the SARC does not include any MVEF, PTA, or Stevenson Foundation monies that are directly donated for programs at the district's regular elementary schools.

PS
Ghysels, IMO, was a wonderful administrator at Landels, and has an extensive and caring background in Special Education. I knew her when I worked as a substitute teacher, in the severely physical disadvantaged classroom at Landels. This is the type of position that is hard to convince substitutes to even sit-in and help. As a Board Member - when I visited her school and talked a bit to teachers, staff, parents (random, ELAC and PTA) I did not find any particular major problems. (minor problems ALWAYS exist)
