Dealing with these government agencies is like living with an alcoholic. No matter how much you give, they want more, and always with excuses about why this time it is different and it isn't their fault that all the stuff you already gave them got wasted.

I say no tax before there is a FIRM, CLEAR plan of how it will be spent.

Treating visitors, employers, and customers as an ATM for the bureaucracy, relying on the voter to think, "I'm happy to stick it to the other guy as long as it doesn't come out of MY pocket", is a poor strategy for the long term.

This article is pretty skimpy on the details about what the funds are for. Can the reporter add any more info about the purpose of the taxes?

Not enough transportation infrastructure in MV? Look at the map! More freeways, thorowfair, trails, bridges and other asphalt wonders than 3 of our neighbors put together! Enough already!

What I find most perplexing is how often the City of MV (and the school districts) need to spend $$$$ on outside experts. One would think that the city staff could do this work? Maybe a little bit of knowledge about statistics is a dangerous thing, but is it really *that* complicated to identify a random sample of 500 MV voters, do telephone interviews with a handful of straightforward questions, and analyze the data?

And I agree with Rich about sticking it to certain subgroups to get money for unrelated activities. I'm going to guess that at least some marijuana users have medical conditions, do we really want to add a financial burden to people who may be struggling with cancer or chronic pain? I hate getting gauged on vacation for airport fees added to car rentals and occupancy taxes on motels/hotels. And why single out large employers, which, in addition to the tech firms, likely includes El Camino Hospital, the school districts, Costco, Walmart, Target, etc?

If the city wants more money for 'traffic improvements" (which I hope includes bike lanes but there are no details given) it seems that the DEVELOPERS who are cramming as much luxury housing as possible could pitch in. Mountain View needs affordable housing, but if developers only want to build high-end luxury housing, then let them help pay for the infrastructure needed to transport and serve our existing and new residents.

No more taxes.
Our car registration went up significantly this year. And what are they doing with the $20.00 charge added years ago on our registration? Those were to be for transportation issues.

@reader: The polling studies are just ways to line the politicians' cronies pockets. Actually, $30K is chump change. The government run VTA bus company finally killed off the ridiculous plan to close 2 lanes of El Camino for only buses but not before spending over $1 Million in "studies".

@Robyn: The state not only increased car registration fees but added 12 cents a gallon to the already huge CA gas taxes. There is an initiative petition circulating to repeal the increases that could use your help. Look it up.

The Mountain View city officials have a sickness called "taxitis". They will never be cured nor will they stop until the next recession hits the city and our state.

So sad to see common sense replaced by a need just to tax their way out of problems.

Government should serve the people efficiently.
