Hmm, "a public interest group is urging Californians to take action", what public interest group?

Now that the big institutions can't protect your money, now someone wants to charge you to protect your credit.

Best bet is to guard your trash, don't throw out private info and be careful using the internet to make transactions.

For sure, that's good advice. Apparently, Equifax has extended the period during which freezes and thaws will be without charge. It's now June 30th 2018 per their phone recorded message.

The free credit freeze only applies to Equifax, but that doesn't really help you unless you also freeze your Experian and TransUnion, which are not free. Thank you Equifax.
