Mountain View loses its downtown visionary

Original post made on Dec 7, 2017

Mountain View's celebrated downtown dining promenade is largely credited to former City Manager Bruce Liedstrand's vision and tenacity. Liedstrand died on Dec. 1 as the result of a stroke. He was 84 years old.

I am so sorry to hear this news. Although not a MV resident I have nevertheless been aware of Bruce Liedstrand's activities for many years and most recently read his article in which he writes about "People Focused Design". I can only wish that members of the Los Altos City council read it as well and take it to heart. My condolences to the Liedstrand family.

Wonder what he thought about our "build at all costs" city planners and council. Cheap square glass buildings lining our once lovely downtown. Even the church is surrounded by these tall ugly buildings.

I'm not sure if the new generation of planners are simply unimaginative or greedy. In any case if they continue we will have nothing but a glass jungle with traffic jams and long lines.

Reminds me of the Pretenders song "My City Was Gone".

What a lovely written tribute to Mr. Liedstrand. Years ago, in my "coffee-house-hopping" days, I would meander around Castro Street and its side streets, wondering who might be behind how everything there was set up and arranged, and admiring the amazing preservation of vintage architecture because I found it then - and still do today - to be very quaint and inviting. My hope for Mountain View is that it continues to maintain an atmosphere of community warmth for countless years to come, fostered by City overseers who are likeminded with Mr. Liedstrand and his vision for this beautiful City, as this would be the most heartwarming tribute to such a special man and his family.

"In Mountain View, whatever we do, we do it well."

That was the conclusion of Bruce's final email to Mountain View's Environmental Planning Commission and the Balanced Mountain View email list, emphasizing the importance of "human livability" in North Bayshore. Bruce was one of the first to put forward a vision -- now on the cusp of becoming a reality -- for an "Innovation Village" in North Bayshore: Web Link

Optimistic, empathetic, and visionary, Bruce will be missed. Let's cherish his legacy of people-oriented design and make him proud.

Bruce will go down in history of Mountain View for his visonary concepts that brought Mountain View to life. He has been a great help to our two visionaries in Santa Clara Rod Dunham and Dan Ondrasek who are in the process of creating a downtown. It is people like these three men that can make dreams come true from their passion. Bruce, you will sorely be missed but thank you for all your help from a neighboring city who admires so much of what you created.
