The city's propensity to regulate everything into dust is astounding. How about just treating shops that sell marijuana as any other retail store? And then address any issues as they arise.

The problem with "industrial areas" is that many of these "industrial"! areas intertwine residential housing. So trying to isolate to these areas is a recipe for disaster. You can't allow something and think it won't have any affects on residents of Mountsin View. That way of thinking is a classic way to force lower income neighborhoods to deal with riff rag that shouldn't be allowed to begin with. Just say no, when it should be no.

Why does it take an entire year? We legalized it, can't we deal with these issues more quickly? I continue to be disappointed with the city's handling of this issue.

I don't see why a problem---Just immediately impose the same restrictions on stores that sell liquor---That will show you almost immediately how well that would work.

Really disappointed in this city's support of retail sales of marijuana. This is such a bad idea, especially in a location like Castro Street. This area is a popular meeting place for nearby middle school and high school students. Yes, I know this age group cannot legally purchase anything, but the availability down the street from their school sends a bad message to our young people. If Mountain View thinks it's cool or financially beneficial to allow these shops, put them in an industrial complex, on Google's campus, or next to an adult bookstore; not downtown near the library, the Performing Arts Center, Mercy Bush Park, Rocket Fizz candy store, or a street away from family homes. What's wrong with you, Mountain View??

why spend so much time worrying about this possibly affecting residents and yet approving new developments with so little parking that it will guarantee adversely affect residents? seriously. answer that, council!

Regulate liquor stores the same way. Unlike cannabis, alcohol actually and regularly kills kids. Anyone who is touting the "protect the kids" argument must make the same argument for wine stores lest they be exposed as hypocrites. Cannabis is so much safer than alcohol.

To Interesting Logic, slow down with the name calling. This article is about cannibis shops, not liquor stores. People who argue that cannibis is not harmful are being naive and shortsighted. The majority of addicts will tell you that their road into drug abuse started with this "unharmful" use of marijuana. It is absolutely a gateway drug, and I don't want it sold downtown . It's ludicrous to think this isn't a problem.

I've never partaken in marijuana, and I hate the smell of it being smoked. But many of our neighbors have peacefully enjoyed marijuana for decades, and I don't think it's anything to be scandalized about. Let's be sensible, regulate it, tax it, and let people exercise their right to enjoy it.
The War on Drugs/"reefer madness" nonsense is the relic of another time. Americans, and especially Californians, have clearly moved on. I'm not saying that marijuana is as healthy as kale salads and 20 minutes of jogging, but all evidence shows that marijuana is less harmful than alcohol. Somehow our community still functions despite the presence of Jane's Beer Store near Castro St. We'll be fine with legal marijuana dispensaries.

Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, and Barack Obama all smoked marijuana. They all became President. Given those facts, I just don't see how acknowledging the existence of marijuana sends a harmful message to young people.
