The high school district sold one high school site in about 1980. But luckily the other two campuses are large enough for expansion. This plan, though, assumes more students will not flee the public schools for safer private schools or home schooling or classes on-line.

Yeah, much like selling the old elementary school that was near Target back in the 80s, the demolition of the old MVHS back in the 80s was a dumb move.

It's why I was very glad that when enrollment dropped in the early 00's the school district just leased Slater out to Google till enrollment could increase.
Hopefully Jose Antonio Vargas school will open soon!

Also, Frank, while I am sure that some (white) people will "flee" the public schools, there are a whole lot of people who either do not want or cannot afford to do so.

Luckily Mountain View has a good tax base and funding method so we can pay our teachers very well.

As a graduate of the MV public schools, I will be glad to pay to upgrade MVHS.
Go Spartans!!!

Hang on ,Yonatan." May I call you "YO" for short? Slater was closed to raise money for employees. The district just extended the lease with Google. Slater is NOT being returned. Nor is Whisman School. The district just extended that lease to the German School for decades. Why? For money honey. Schools are operated for the benefit of administrators and other employees. Students come and go. They are secondary.

looking at the world with dystopian glasses will usually get you a distorted view

the old Castro Street block of old MVHS is a much better resource for the community as a large public park & pool, large apartment community, and a multitude of street-level retail establishments

get your cuppa and falafel or pizza

IMO

Why not leased out or sell all of the school sites and close the district? Poor families could receive vouchers for other schools or options - such as online schooling. Rich families have no business receiving welfare assistance through the provision of public schools.
