Mountain View adopts ACLU 'Freedom City' policies

Original post made on Sep 14, 2017

Hoping to assuage lingering fears in the immigrant community, the Mountain View City Council took a new step to reassure vulnerable residents that the city has their back. Local elected leaders on Tuesday formally signed on Mountain View to many "Freedom City" policies, committing local officials and the police to a higher set of standards for dealing with undocumented individuals.

Very proud of my city! Besides the moral and humanitarian concerns, helping immigrants feel safe about reporting crimes to the police makes the community safer for all of us.

Mark Noack and commenter "DG" are incorrect as written. This is not about "the immigrant community" or "helping immigrants feel safe" but about illegal aliens (euphemized successively as illegal immigrants; "undocumented," meaning illegal, immigrants; and very recently just "immigrants" -- which utterly misleads any reader not up on the latest euphemistic code).

This has nothing to do with most actual immigrants to the US (such as those who founded many Bay-Area employers, including co-founding Google, or who served in public office, including a recent California governor and several cabinet secretaries in modern times).

Visualize----
One day, an itinerant worker looks at your home, decides he like it better than where he/she's living, and walks in through the unlocked front door. You hear him/her, but rarely see them. You call the cops, who come in but only find one of them, and take him/her off to jail. You often find food gone from your refrigerator, but don't see what's doing it. You call the cops again, and are told that they won't be helping you, as the the govt has decided that it's not nice to try to kick them out. The invader is just another human being to whom you owe decency and respect-----Do you 1; leave food out where you think the invader hides, together with a warm blanket? 2; run around trying to scare the invader away? 3; Start locking your front door? 4; Hire armed patrols? 5;threaten to send the intruder back where they came from? 6; Try to find someway that the intruder doesn't bother you, even though he/she didn't go back to their earlier dwelling place?-------------------THINK about it---what would you really do (not what you think your words should be.)

Oh no, Alan! Someone kicked you out of your house?!? I'm so sorry.

Or maybe your analogy is only structured to support your preexisting bigotries about your neighbors.

Oooh, oooh, I can do this, too, and I think my analogy is way better

What if instead of your house, it was your church? What should the church do, kick that person out? Of course not, and we can all agree on that.

Now, the real question is should we treat our country more like a church or your house? Are you going to say that we shouldn't strive to be like the church?

Well of course you would welcome the intruder into your home! After all, he was just trying to find a better home for himself - kicking him out would be inhumane and any threats to make him leave would make him fearful. He should not have to live in fear! And don't forget that he has rights! Because he's been there for awhile he has a right to live there, a right to your food, bathrooms, laundry facilities and a right to protest you requiring him to leave. Don't call the police to help you out. Unless he's attacked you he's done no harm so they have no authority to remove him. Have some compassion!

Actually LOL, the "church" has some pretty interesting and stringent requirements for admittance as well. Not everyone can just walk thru the Pearly Gates.

Gee,,to think there's a border there too.

Oh and I forgot (but LOL reminded me) - if you don't want that intruder living in your house you're a bigot! Probably a mysogynistic, antisemitic, xenophobic white supremacist too.

Yeah, mvresident, it does have stringent requirements, and from your posting, I've got some bad news for you:

"Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.’

“They also will answer, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?’

“He will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.’

“Then they will go away to eternal punishment"

Jesus was quite clear on what to do. Why are you turning him away?

eudaemon76, nice copy-paste job from American Patrol Report, a known hate site (Web Link Let's just say, I wouldn't take legal advice from them.

It's so weird how it keeps happening that many of the people posting against our neighbors end up being bigots. Must be a coincidence, since all those other posters clutched their pearls at the mere suggestion that there was any bigotry here.

LOL, how many of these people you're so supportive of live in your house? No. Really, seriously. How many are you welcoming into your home RIGHT NOW , this moment? Because if you're not hosting at least two, three, four, whatever the number, of you're not actively supporting, paying for.....you're a hypocrite.

Those who believe in following our laws are not bigots. Understanding that there is a Rule of Law that we live by as a society does not make us bigots.

The police chief says no action against those whose only crime is immigration violation. If someone doesn't come to a complete stop at stop sign or is using their cell phone w/o handsfree the Mtn View police force has not been so lenient. This is really an upside down situation where real criminals get a free pass and law abiding taxpayers get nothing. The end result is a deterioration of the rule of law that leads to anarchy.

@mvresident2003, so, which number is it? [Portion removed due to disrespectful comment or offensive language] To your point, I have taken the pledge at "The Life You Can Save," (http://www.thelifeyoucansave.org) albeit it at a higher level than the default, and I do house the needy in my home.

Now that I've answered your question, please, answer mine: why are you turning Him away?

@MV Resident, so unlawful presence is a "real crime," while not stopping at stop signs and texting and driving are not? One would think that Rule of Law absolutists like our two MV Residents in Monta Loma would view all of these as "real crimes," which would make all who commit them "real criminals." You're certain not law-abiding if you roll through stop signs or text-and-drive.

Is your point then that you think only one of these should be considered "real crime?" If so, you are not dedicated to Rule of Law at all.
