Superintendent: swift action needed for North Bayshore schools

Original post made on Aug 25, 2017

Mountain View Whisman School District board members agreed last week that it's time to get serious about Mountain View's ambitious plans for North Bayshore, where up to 10,000 new housing units are expected to generate thousands of new students in a school district that has neither the space nor the money for them.

The superintendent is correct in calling attention to this issue.
In addition to exploring the options for space large enough for a traditional school for the elem/high districts, both districts should study the city staff's own report on exploring micro schools as alternative solutions to traditionally sized schools.

Micro schools may provide our community both the flexibility to tie the full cost of new schools to new housing developments and the innovation that ideally should be reflected in any new community in North Bayshore.

For more info on micro schools (a movement largely started here in the Bay Area: AltSchool/BrightWorks or Khan Lab School here in MV):

Seems like a huge impact for the high school district as well - which has already run out of space. Is Mountain View considering the impact on MVLA?

I am pleased to see someone standing up to our city counsel members with an intelligent argument against expanding MV. I don't understand why there isn't more discussion about the obvious... large Tech companies need to expand in other states and spread the income opportunities elsewhere. The infrastructure clearly isn't feasible here in MV.

Sorry, I still can't get over the last report about how toxic the soil currently is in this area. I feel sorry for any children who have no choice but to live in this area.

Allowing over 6 million dollars a year in local property taxes revenue [per year! and increasing] to be diverted from MVWSD into the Shoreline "quasi-RDA" is a travesty of local public policy. If Shoreline district was closed, like a thousand other California RDAs starting in 2011, Mountain View schools would not have this particular dilemma.

How to fund the OPERATIONS and the building of new schools, brought on by new development North of 101?

SUNSET Shoreline, just close it! There already was about $20 M in post-closure dump trust fund money a few years ago. The City will be getting it's full and rightful share of new property tax (based on new Assessed Valuation) from all the new property build, and older properties resold North of 101.

This community should try to close SHORELINE district, so it will no longer divert 9/10 of school property tax revenue into a city-controlled special quasi-Redevelopment District. Why should our local public education's local revenue - be held hostage to GOOGLE and the city's largess in a limited contract with a Joint Powers Agreement?

SUNSET on Shoreline

Appendix H-9 ($9,214,256.76 diverted from MV elementary district)

These are critical issues and Ayinde Rudolph's foresight to urge dialogue among the Board and across the community is keenly important. Let's look forward as a community to create the best educational environment possible in every corner of Mountain View.

You have GOT to be kidding me. Build build build. Does anybody in City Council have a brain or a heart? Does MV really need THAT much money? We are getting packed like sardines! Please STOP! Thank goodness you cannot fill in the bay, because I know you would if you could.
