Stevens Creek Trail Repair

Original post made by Sam Moore, Waverly Park, on Jul 10, 2017

Whatever happened to the repair to the Stevens Creek trail that was damaged by the winter storm earlier this year? The Santa Clara Valley Water District promised to fix the trail that has impacted bicycle commuters along the trail, but what we have a half-hearted solution so far. They were going to getting everything fixed in summer 2017. Any one know what's happening or should we get our Board representative Gary Kremen to give us an update?

Sam

You should contact your representatives. Last I heard, permanent repairs aren't expected to be complete until the end of next year.

The Santa Clara Valley Water District hasn't made any promises about if/when it will be fixed (afaik at least). Repairs will have to be done during the dry summer, so perhaps summer of 2018?

The Santa Clara Valley Water District’s Board of Directors, can be contacted in the
following ways:

I have been following the issue since the washout and cannot recall any promised date about repairs. I assume since you started the thread you have this info so would love to read it.

Yes, the current route is temporary, it's a stop-gap fix that's not too entirely bad now so I don't mind it. It's a hundred times better than the Yuba Dr. route. Further improvements will be welcome, but I understand there are priorities with so much damage this winter, and with the acceptable detour now in place, I can wait for it to be done. As a daily trail user I find it funny to think other users are impacted THAT badly. I mean, in about 20 seconds of riding you're past it and back onto the trail.

It'll get done, but I guess we should expect the "whaaa-whaas" until everything is perfect in their world and done on their schedule.

The "temporary" path is great! What's the problem?

The Santa Clara Valley Water District plans to repair erosion of the east bank of Stevens Creek (north) of El Camino Real in summer 2018.

We understand the Stevens Creek Trail is important to many commuters and trail users. Due to environmental regulations, we can only do this sort of repair work between June and October. Because of the limited timeline in 2017 to prepare design documents to secure competitive bids for construction, build within the short work window, and comply with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) reimbursement process, the District determined it would be best to move forward with the project in summer 2018. This will assure that there is adequate time to plan and construct the repair. The City of Mountain View has arranged for a trail detour/bypass through the adjacent hotel property. We understand this temporary solution has been working well. The District intends to seek reimbursement from FEMA for winter storm events that contributed to erosion at the site.

If you have additional questions about this repair plan, please contact Interim Deputy Operating Officer Ngoc Nguyen at 408-630-2632 or at nnguyen@valleywater.org.

Thank you,

Gary Kremen
Director, District 7
Santa Clara Valley Water District
